    Hey all just a quick question. Posting as I have limited ability to search the forum on the mobile.

    Came into nicaragua today at Los manos and after no Internet yesterday didn't realize I needed insurance and didn't spot any at the border, nor did they ask for it?! Oops. In the small town of jinoteca (after some fun roads) and wondering on advice. Don't know if I can get insurance here now. Heading to granada tomorrow and try there? Or is it not needed?

    Thanks again.

    They normally require you to buy it for $12 bucks right there on the spot when you import the bike. Its normally part of the bike permit process. Maybe the customs agent forgot about it before issuing you the bike permit? I would say dont worry about it now because you only need to buy it to get the permit. But that's just me.

    At this point you will only need it if stopped by the police. BaldOne and I spend about 10 minutes tying to understand why the police lady keep saying seguro. Stay off the main roads and you'll be fine.

    I didn't find any "bad" police, just ones wanting to make some extra money. After they realize you are not going to be intimidated they are ok. At this point, I'd only get some if you want to avoid explaining why you don't have insurance if you get stopped. And, if you do they will only want some $$ as a "fine". I made the mistake of not preparing my wallet with a few small bills before taking off one day so it was a little hard to say I was broke :huh

    You will not be asked for any proof of insurance when leaving Nicaragua.

    At Los Manos the Insurance booth or table is 50 ft passed the Aduana window. I was stopped twice by the Police and asked for my license only, both times for speeding and they wanted a donation, which I never provided I was pleasant and waited them out in the shade. Just turn on the charm and you will be okay.

    Fantastic thanks. Been past 2 police stops now and have been waived through. Nice to know they are generally not after insurance papers! And I can turn on the charm when needed. Will wing it for the few days I am here, keep my speed down and stay off the PanAm as much as I can.

    Cheers all.

    If you end up in Granada the Hotel Dorada is $15.00 and you can park in the hallway, it is 2 blocks west from the main park close to Merced Church. They have a hammock making co op. The food stand in 1 corner of the park sells somthing called Vidrone ,Yucca topped with pork rinds and a hot pepper cole slaw.....yummy!

    if you want something to wrry about besides being hassled by the po-po for not having a card, just get into an accident and not have one. you will be locked up until the damage, property, bodily or otherwise is paid in full. oh, and just how you do that whilst locked up? that's your problem. this is the ONLY reason Nica has minimum mandatory insurance requirements. without it, no one would ever get paid for damage. in granada, you can purchase the insurance from Mapfre which is on avendida de madrid. ask around, granada is not that big.

    for $15.00 it aint worth "winging it" as you say. that's the stuff nightmares are made of. I'd pay $150 to stay out of a nica jail.

    Ok. So I couldn't find la Madrid street but I got the insurance at the end at;

    "iniser" Corner of 14th de septiembre and Calle Estrada. Just south of la Merced church.

    $12.

    Done. Feel better. Thanks TeeVee for telling me to pull my finger out.

    I agree too, small cost to avoid big trouble.

    Anyway that to me is seriously well worth it. :clap
