We came down off Buck Bald and headed back up 68 to FR126, which is a great gravel road. Along the way I spotted FT136, which was marked for motorcycle travel, so we detoured to investigate.

    KennyH heading in.

I don't think that this trail gets used much. There had been a forest fire and there were trees down everywhere. The trail was really grown in. You can clearly see the trail in this shot.

KennyH, using his better judgement stopped. There appeared to be a commanding view of the area at the top of the trail so I continued. The trail got steeper and steeper and there were logs laying everywhere, in every direction. I made it half way up and stopped.

    Looking down the trail.

Looking up the trail, time to turn around, bummer dude!

We hooked up on River Road and took that to the Gravelhala.

    Pretty waterfall along the road.

We ended up on 129 and rode that up to the Dragon. Stopped there for some grub, and boy was it excellent!!

    Tree of shame.

Fontana Dam from the top, 480 feet high!
Fontana Dam from the campground at the bottom. What a cool place to camp!

Having stayed here myself I can tell you it is not a cool place to stay. The daytime heat is very high due to lack of air flow and the campground is poorly kept and washrooms dirty, and not cleaned daily. I also though it looked good at first sight but was shocked when I stayed there. Sorry to ruin the thoughts but I'd be avoiding my duty as a fellow rider to ignore this and let some else suffer.

Thanks for the heads up! It's a cool location, but I bet it gets hot there. I don't think I'd be too happy taking my 38' motorhome up 129 from Robbinsville to get there.

    Nightstalker,

What a fantastic way to see the country. I am sure it took quite a bit of effort to get the money saved up, but it looks worth it already.

Nice pictures and a great write-up. Keep it up!!!

I won't be real close. I'll be in Banff August 5-12, then heading to Jasper for a week, and then Clearwater, BC for a week.

Wow! Was I a lucky dog today. A GIANT KLR rally was going on at Tellico Plains, TN, only 70 some miles from my current home in Townsend, TN.

I left at 8:00 AM, and boy was it cold!! Took me about 90 miles to get to the Motorcycle Resort. Stopped to take this picture on the way in.

I haven't done many motorcycle rallies in the past (and I sure don't remember Smokin Hole '06) and this was my first KLR rally. This was the first picture I took upon arrival. Odd bunch those Kawi guys...

Cherokee Chuck, the rally master, and his KLR.

At least I wasn't the only non-Kawi rider. This dishy MZ was there. Very awesome on road, and impressive off too!

Some of those guys were real serious about their knobs!! That's one of those legendary Terrorflex's on the back.

    First stop.

    Nice view.

When I have my tank bag on, I take a lot of in motion photo's. Unfortunately, today was not one of those days. However, I did give it that old college try. Didn't work out that well, but here's a couple that are worth looking at.

Everyone was having a great time!

Miles and miles of dirt roads. Loads of sunshine was dusting us up a bit.

There's only one cure for dusty bikes...WATER CROSSING!!!

    Freshly graveled, ultra-mega-dusty road.

Back at the Resort for the intermission before round two.

One of them there brand spanking new KLR650's!! I've only seen pictures, as have many, but this thing looks way better in person! And, it seemed to perform as well as the other bikes off road.

This poor bastard crashed on his way to the event last night. He was around 12 miles from the resort when a Harley rider came around a curve and ran him off the road. He was back from the hospital and in good spirits. Here's a couple of shots of his bike.

The second half of the day started just as good as the first with the most excellent Witt Road, which has 4 water crossings. Bring it on!
