Bonner Bridge has been closed as unsafe:
Well, I guess it's to be expected. Oregon Inlet is one of the most dangerous inlets on the east coast with a historically high number of wrecking events. The current rips through there and every time I've been through, there's always a Corps dredge.
tiny breaks in the OBX and a huge body of water inland make for some awesome currents. Only a handful of tiny inlets serve the entire IBX (inner banks). Oregon is the only one with a bridge. they have known that the Bonner bridge needed to be replaced or rebuilt for a long time. Of course, nobody wants to pony up the bucks, so now it's an emergency.

Yep, but they'll find a way to spread the cost around.
Since they've all but banned 4WD access to the whole area, I have zero reason to return anyway. But the folks with $5M vacation houses will insist that I help pay for a way to get to their place, just like they did with their insurance.
