So I've had my 13 990a over a year now, 3700 city miles. Am I the only one who hates the tranny on this bike? The ratios are fine, but it just is the worst shifting bike I've ever ridden. Almost impossible to keep from going into to neutral from 1-2, mainly when the engine is warm to hot. Extremely notchy feel. Downshifts are difficult unless I partially release the clutch lever. And it occasionally slips out of second under acceleration.

Dealer says all is fine. Has had the Motorex full synth oil since new. Has KTM improved this on the 1190?

My 950 is notchy shifting as well. It likes a stiff boot. I think that's an English expression, isn't it? Meaning something else entirely?

Clean clutch jet, check clutch booster and bleed clutch system/replace. LC8 changes gear like a Honda.

The deep steel clutch disc usually gets a groove from its friction with the bellevile spring. Usually replacing it with another steel disc makes wonders. You need to lean the bike to the left, so not to have oil dripping.
    Cheers.

I have a '11 990, and I felt just as you do when I first bought it. Missed shifts everywhere, notchy and weird false neutrals between 4-5.

I'd say give it some more time to break in, mine seemed to smooth itself out over time. Haven't had a false neutral in a while, and missed shifts are less than 10% of the time.

I've had (quite a few actually) bikes with smoother tranny's but this one grew on me over time.

Go ride a BMW 1150/1200 and then come back and talk to us about how great your KTM shifts. :lol3

This and and making sure that the plates where facing the correct way helped my shifting.

my '11 990 worked fine? I did have 1 to 2 problems until I lowered the shifter, after that it worked fine. the 1190 is the same or possibly a tad smoother? not quite CBR quality, but pretty close.

I've got an '11 with many thousand miles of dirt, gravel and tarmac. During break-in, I managed to find that "phantom neutral" between 4 and 5 (or was it 5 and 6) twice but other than that, it shifts just like I think it should. Have run everything from Motul to Mobile1 with no noticeable change to the shifting.

I've been riding many steeds over a few decades (mostly dirt) and find that this one shifts quite well ... at least I am ecstatically happy with it ;)

    Hope you find the issue.

My '13 990 SMT was a bit rough shifting at first. Like the poster above my issue was an occasional false neutral between either 4&5th or 5&6th.

It may need a bit more thrashing yet to get things smoothed out however what you're describing sounds a bit different than normal break-in woes to me.

Do you know anyone else that rides that you trust to ride the bike and offer a second opinion?

I've noticed smoother shifting, especially upshifting, not completely closing the throttle.
