The rear tire is harder to do, but I have faith that you can do it..........
Congrats! It's very comforting to know that if you are in the middle of nowhere, you know how to do this. For myself, I am much less afraid of riding alone because of it.
My biggest fear is still sand and dropping Spirit. Even though I know I can lift her, it takes a long time and it's utterly exhausting!
No matter how long, it's getting it done that counts.
About loseing the air, it's good practice to blow the tire up , let the air out and bounce the whole thing to situate the tube inside the tire. I know it was a lot of work to do with the handpump , but it was proper procedure.
If you ever change tires with the use of an air compressor , blow them up and let it out a couple of times, can't hurt.
I have to ask somehow my head is messing with that picture of the tire, by any chance is there a arrow on the sidewall of the tire showing rotation? Somehow it looks like its rotation backwards....

It looks backwards to me too! The arrow should point to forward rotation,if the arrow nearest the ground is pointing forward....it's backwards!
The tire sure does look like the it should be turned around, I hope not for your sake but do check it to be sure. Better to be safe than sorry. The first couple tire changes are the worse, having to use that little pump would be the worse thing to me.
Been quietly reading your RR.. I had to read this to my wife because she feels the same way when we are wrenching on our bikes. Most times she can do what ever she wants but sometimes she has to ask me for help. A lot of the time its not about strength but technique. The day we got a breaker bar she was a happy girl. I am pretty lucky to have a woman that likes tools as gifts. usually on her race bike i cheat and use the tire warmers to soften them up. lol but there is no access to warmers in the woods so i too need to get schooled up on spooning on dirtbike tires. Well in closing like to say I like your reports and looking forward to reading more of them once you get rolling on the open road again.
well just posted to see the pics of you changing the tire pop up!! after tearing your engine apart the tire change must of been not as bad as it looked when you watch the cave men try to muscle tires on lol Even after 20 plus years working with tools sometimes when i get to a new job i haven't done before I have some trepidation doing a big job i have not done before. usually after i get done I look back and thing it wasn't has hard as i made it out to be in my head before i started. Hope this is how you felt after finishing the tire change and now have the confidence that you could tackle the job on the road.
Nomadgirl has the tire on correctly.The blocks angle to the rear.
and you can also go higher than 40 to seat the tire - just don't run it like this.
And keep in mind, if you ever run a flat on the road or dirt, the tire normally breaks the beat anyway... saves a lot of time

Hahaha Silke! You should have seen me pumping away with my little hand pump until I was red in my face.
I really had no desire to go higher than 40 psi. There's a gas station near my friend's house, I think I might just tie the rear tire on her bicycle and paddle on over there to seat the bead.
is there a second bike around? if so, use the side-stand to break the beat
(but watch out if it's a KTM with the super-mean-high-powered-spring-loaded-shin-killing-sidestand.... don't ask me how I know)
Sorry Silke, I meant to type seat the bead! Haha, breaking it is easy now with my handy dandy C-Clamp!
I just didn't want to have to try and pump the rear tire up to 60psi by hand in order to seat the bead. Hence a trip to the gas station
I have one of these which works pretty well. Mine came in a large box of crap the PO gave me, so I don't have all the neat attachments, but I've used it successfully several times now. Much easier to seat than pumping by hand. Kind of a pain in the ass to get to the battery terminals, (I only have the alligator clip attachment), but somebody on my RR mentioned that I could use the starter relay as a jump point, which is easy to get to under one of my side panels, so I don't have to take off the seat.
Obviously you want to turn the bike on if you're drawing from the battery for any length of time, but it's a good use of the power that you already have with you. Now that I know about the side panel thing, I'll probably be less reluctant to air down my tires offroad too.
Use a ratchet strap to compress the tire and make setting the bead easy.
When it gets to 60 psi and it isnt set dribble it, bounce it down on ground hard and catch it and bounce it again and work your way around the tire till it seats.
