Looks like we will have a few riders for a dual sport ride sept 20 weekend. We will be riding the wawa/ Chapleau area, probably somewhere around 1000 km total lots of options to opt out part way. If anyone in interested in 1 2 or 3 days of riding. mostly old back roads, all are welcome. About 100 miles between gas at the most.

I might be interested in being part of it.

I just read your ride report from June and was surprised that someone else has actually been to Halfway Haven. :lol3

Just gonna be some guys out for a ride having some fun, Nofate. Not much for organization. We haven't nailed down an exact route yet. Looks like we have some bikes riding down from Timmins and maybe sudbury. A chapleau start might make more sense if more riders are coming from that direction. Most likely be a 2 or 3 day ride. Would be great to meet up with you and a local guide is always good.:clap

If Chapleau is central to the guys from Timmins, Sudbury and Wawa it might be possible to all meet up here on day one. I could come up with a couple of local riding options depending on how much time is available.

Is camping in the plan or motels? The weather can be pretty wet and cool this time of year. I might be able to host the first night at my place. We'll see what happens as your plan comes together.

I think we've decided against tenting it. Lots of places to stay.
As much as i like to tent it. travelling light is good too.
halfway haven, chicken ranch(valentine farms), nofates maybe. My place in Wawa.
We are now thinking of starting on friday (meet up thursday night) to make it a 3 day weekend. Still not sure on the starting point, depends on how it works out for the majority of the riders. Don't think there will be too many. Everyone seems to have those job things that get in the way.
Any other dual sporters up there Nofate?

    Hey Gord,
I'm in for Thurs after work, Fri, Sat, and Sun. My windshield came in last week, my SPOT Ram mount today and my rear rack just passed through customs. I should have all my stuff mounted by the end of the weekend. I will do a pre-packing to see what I can carry. Here's my setup:

I will be running my dual sport street tires. The Terror-Flex/Scorpion combo will stay in the garage this time around.

Looks like serious touring..... remember, to slow when you take pictures, they show up better on the ride report.

Have a good run Gord70, see you in the spring.... hey bring some of these guys with you... and we can have a MEGA ICE BREAKER around Thunder Bay.... could probably get 2 dozen riders.

Your more set up all the time GAT (GPS Adventure Touring). Don't get carried away and pack too much stuff. lol

Thanks for the good wishes Backroader. Hopefully I can talk a few into the icebreaker next year. A big group would be cool.
I'll be riding a new (to me) bike so I'll probably take it easy and take some pics:wink: . My Old mule is gonna get a little break this time. Hope she doesn't get jelous.

Tried out the new rubber yesturday on a 430km Adventue Tour. The front washed out a few times but I was twisting pretty aggressively. All should be cool for next weekend. No noticable wear!

Mounted the Turbo City rear rack Friday. It looks cool but that is as far as it goes. It is non functional at all. What a peice of cr%p.

Sent you my ph # nofate. Great to see your in.

Looking like we can't get out of here early friday due to staffing issues at my bussiness but we should be out before noon, on to halfway haven for a late lunch then on to chapleau for an evening arrival.
Saturday we'll ride chapleau to Missinabie. possibly dubreuilville, hawk junction and wawa. We'll go with the flow and see how it goes. then sunday maybe a short local ride if anyone is wanting more.
then everyone will have plenty of time to get home at a reasonable hour.

Wish I could go...I have this little problem called work(sucks).

I lived in Renabie when I was a kid, so the ride up to Missanabie would be a hoot for me.

Maybe sometime next year, Gord. Would be great to see Nofate, again, as well.:freaky Excellent guy, but be careful, he'll treat you too good, and you won't want to leave!

OK, heres a couple of pics and a quick ride report of Friday's riding.

I rode from Chapleau to meet up with Gord, Russ and James on Friday morning. We left Gord's shop right after he installed a new chain on his KTM950 and went to check out the breakers rolling in on lake Superior. After gassing up we headed out to Halfway Haven along the power line.

Fearless leader and fast rider Gord70 taking a break on the KTM950.

We stopped on top of a small dam for a few pics and a gust of wind blew Gord's helmet off his bike and down into the water at the base of the dam where it floated. James climbed down a chain to retrieve his helmet.

The trail along the power line was gruelling in many sections and included steep hills with loose boulders, water crossings, and washed out culverts. I was amazed at how Gord rode that big KTM through some of that stuff. He said the secret was to give it more throttle. We stopped for a break at the top of a hill with a good view.

We arrived at Halfway Haven for a late lunch and some gas at $2.10/L. Halfway haven is a small destination for ATVs, snowmobiles, Jeeps, and bikes and is literally in the middle of nowhere. There are several routes there from Wawa, Sault Ste. Marie and Chapleau and some of them are quite a challenging ride in the vehicle of your choice. Steve and Gail Bonny are great hosts and try to provide for all your needs once you get there.

We continued towards Chapleau along the power line despite warnings of a big washout on the trail that might be impassable. The luggage rack and licence plate on James' KTM 530 fell off on this section and we had to backtrack a bit to recover his stuff. Gord loaded James' stuff onto his bike and we kept going. The washout we were dreading turned out to be a minor one and we were relieved. The rest of the way to Chapleau was easy riding on logging roads. We stopped at the Montreal River Bridge to take a few pics.

We arrived at my house before 7:00 pm where we enjoyed a much deserved sauna, beers and a beef stew supper before crashing for the night.
Saturday morning we had breakfast and got gas at Kathy's Kitchen on Hwy. 101. Gord and Russ proceeded to Wawa by means of the back roads on the north side of the highway. James had a leaking seal on his primary sprocket shaft and elected to head back to Timmins instead so he followed me along an interesting back trail to Chapleau and then to my house. Before James headed back to Timmins he flew with me to help me close down a buddy's fishing camp for the season. Thanks for the help James.

Maybe Gord70, Russ and James will post more details and pics on a seperate ride report or just add to this thread. It was a great ride.
