I am planning a low budget trip in a couple of weeks, and was hoping to get some suggestions on roads or sights I should not miss (or avoid altogether). I will be camping every night, and living as cheap as possible. Time is not important, I have plenty of that.

Here is what I've got so far for a route:

Just got back from Shreveport last week.

    1) Might consider heading thru Rome, GA over thru Cedartown area thru the mountains into Alabama over thru backwood road to Tupelo, Mississippi...take in the Elvis Presley museum in Tupelo..etc.
    2) From Tupelo, go north a few miles and catch the Natches Trace Parkway down to Natches, (town of) Mississippi. Some buildings there from mid 1700's. Very neat Museum about the Mississippi River south of Natchez.
    3) Head west towards Texas, might checkout Vicksburg Civil War Museum.

Lots of other stuff along that route......BUT

your biggest concern should be keeping track of the weather...bad rains and upper 30 temperatures for next week might leave a chill to camping....I find Motel6 a great camping location...$39 most places.

I am thinking about leaving around 11/8, but I am also an unemployed fool, and can leave whenever I get ready. New tire will be here in a few days.

I thought about Mexico, and may add that to the trip. I have family in Corpus Christi.

Having some company might be a good thing for Mexico...:eek1

Just me but living in Houston I find the ride on 10 and 59 sucks. I would hit 87 out of Beaumont ride down the coast to Freeport then take 35 over. Much more scenic

doing a similar route the end of the month.

Go south, chase the Gulf , except I am going to chase the Mex. border all the way to the Pacific.
Only dodging Laredo......they are still kidknapping Americans there :huh

Gruney, I'll be heading to Texas the week between Christmas and New Years so I'm going to be following your trip to see if I can use any of it during my route planning. I will suggest taking the ferry from Gulf Shores (Fort Morgan) over to Dauphin Island. It takes 45 minutes to an hour and is a nice break from the ride.

    Have knobbys.

87 doesn't exist as a road from Port Arthur to High Island.

Since you're camping, I can suggest Gulf State park there in Gulf Shores. It has clean facilities and even a laundry room if you need them. Put this trip off until the week between Christmas and New Years, and I'll ride with you for a couple days. Better yet, you ride the route and do it again next month with me. :lol3

I just can't wait any longer. I am leaving tomorrow for Texas. I have no money, no job, no hope of ever finding a job, so I am outta here. The wife & kids will have to do their own laundry for a while.

I plan to pack a bunch of PB&J sandwiches and a gallon jug of water. I will sleep wherever I can for free. My sister said I can work on their cotton farm for a while, driving a tractor, fixing stuff that breaks, whatever.

I finally got a new Conti-Motion front tire to replace that bubbling Shinko, changed the oil, and lubed the chain.

I am packing today, not bringing many clothes, just what I can wear, and some extra socks and underwear.

The plan is to hug the Gulf coast as much as possible. Hopefully it's warmer than here, cause it's COLD! My biggest concern its the cold nights in the tent.

I am bringing my shitty laptop and camera, and hope to post the details of my trip as I go.

Stay off of I-10 between Lake Charles and Houston on the weekends.

Damn crazy Texans will run over you going to or coming from the casinos.

Couple of different routes around that section.
