Did you steal...oops, I meant rent any of those bikes for a ride :evil Doesn't look like they require plates down there...or at least don't care if they are plated?

Mike, thanks for the pics. A little different from the cruiser crowd here. :D

    Cheers, Brian

There were some opportunities to rent bikes and do a tour with a guide. There was a motorcycle rental right next to our resort. If they had something like a KTM Duke 200, I might have been persuaded. A group we met from Thunder Bay were going to do it (they were riders). I wondered if they had been off the resort and seen first hand the "battle conditions" that exist for riders there. I tried to fill them in. It didn't seem to matter. Granted, if they stayed away from the cities - they'd probably be O.K. Ultimately, they didn't go - after being warned by another tourist that it was a crazy idea. Ha...ha..

I spoke to a couple of local riders at a jewelry store. They said that a 125cc was considered a big bike there. And many of the locals liked the 2-strokes better, because they could use a greater amount of 2-stroke premix when filling up, because it was cheaper than gasoline there. The cheapest guys looked like they were fumigating the streets - there was so much blue smoke. They said that helmets were required by law - but it wasn't strictly enforced.:D For the entire 2 weeks, I noticed maybe 5 riders with helmets. Lots of honking too by motorcycles - to alert traffic and effectively say "Hey - look I'm here behind you about to pass, even with traffic coming the other direction". It seemed many would honk as soon as they were next to a car to signal "I'm on your left side". But I must admit - the cagers are all very considerate toward motorcyclists there and would give them the right of way - in almost all instances. According to our tour guide, there are very few motorcycle fatalities in Puerto Plata. Many more car fatalities even though there are more bikes on the road.

Just finished reading through it now. Yep. Excellent report. Love the free camping too. Might need to add some vicegrips to my toolkit just in case my clutch cable snaps. :D

Thought I would share a few photo's of my latest project bike.

Pulled the chain cover, clean the all the grease and sand out. The previous owner lived 2 miles from the nearest slab. The dust
suppressant used on gravel roads contains calcium, which eats paint and causes rusting.

Removed the old chain... 26000 kms, it had a good life.

    Cleaned up the rim

Chain on... good to close er up.

The pipes were a bitch to clean....

Used Brake Clean, Sea Foam Deep Creep and Dry Wash Premium Metal Polish to cut through about 95%... looks like there will be a little scarring from 30 years of use.

Waiting for some parts to complete the project...

The fender was toast.... Got one in the paint shop... it should be ready next week.

    Great job Greg! :clap
Looks fast with that red paint. :-)

It may be me, but that new chain looks kind 'a tight.
But, this thing's an ornament now, so I guess it doesn't really matter. :cry

Keep up the good work BackRoader. Can't wait to try...I mean see the finished product!

    Hey Rob,

Looks like you may be getting some snow in a day or so. The storm is just getting going here and sounds like it will dump a fair bit here with strong winds.
The 'in between' seasons would be good to do bike or sled maintenance. (if you have a warm place to work) :D I don't have such a place yet. :cry

Greg, it looks like the bike is coming along nicely.

Is anyone still going to brave the elements to go check out the bike show this weekend?
I was planning to make my way down there tomorrow a.m. But now I am on the fence, it rained all night in Fort, and is going to rain through the day, and turn to snow tonight
It will be a game time decision

Hey 2whlrider, I'm kinda in the same boat. Have a place to work on them but not heated and no money to spend right now anyway...just sit and stare out the window for another 3 months :huh
