Looks like no problems and a great trip so far Hekto! Noticed the nice little dirt devil off to the right in the first pic. Saw a ton of those in Nevada/Arizona. Looks like the Mountain riding would be a blast!

I've only got a week so I don't want to stray too far North or West of Gitchee Gumee. Looked at Backroads Mapbook. But I'd need to buy 2 different ones for about $55. Money probably better spent toward a GPS. Is there a good source for GPS maps? de Lorme? Yes I saw Cannonshot's reports. Have done a couple long enduro safari roads with him in U.P. ( Been to Crisp Point.)

Would be fun to ride with you all. Find the best beer. :freaky.

Hey Ted! The Backroads Mapbooks come in GPS form also. I know Ron has one of them, he might be able to comment on it. I just have a Garmin Hcx Vista and Canadian/USA topo maps. Should be a nice little trip...I know if you have a limited time, so it's hard to pick your weather but remember that it can be extremely cold along the west and north shore of Superior even in the summer. Have fun!

That's 600 kms the way the crow flies :eek1 Didn't know there was a winter road that ran from Manitoba to Ontario. That would be quite the drive...or are you planning on riding it :evil

Holly crap, worse than I thought! Wouldn't catch me dead driving that http://www.wawataynews.ca/sagatay/node/14

Can't even find any photos or maps of it. Okay, I see it goes down the rive from Peawanuck across the tundra for 35kms or so and onto a tributary and up the Severn River to Fort Severn and then winds it's way across to Gillam or something to that effect.

    Good luck with your quest!

Backroads Mapbook for Ontario is incredible, but pricey if you don't live here. (About 150 bucks for the microSD card) t shows everything, canoe routes, snowmobile trails, the TCat...not worth it for your ride.

I run a Garmin 60Cx , it serves me very well. There's an awful lot of roads and trails here, PM me when the time is nearer, and maybe we can get together. (I work a one week in/out fly out job)

The invitation is open to anyone who wants to join me.

I leave Owen Sound either the 15th or 22nd of Feb for the Peg then its up lake Winnipeg to Norway House out to Gillam finally ending up somewhere on the Hudson Bay sea ice before the winter road closes. The goal is to camp at least 2/3rds of the way. I'll be swapping lake studded tires somewhere near Selkirk for the hard water sections. There's no great noble goal to this, just a bit 'o mid winter fun. (facebook "The Brokentooth Project")

Ron, I have a zumo and a 62s which should be fine, I just thought a squiggly line would be fun to look at.

The GPS part of my reply was more geared toward TedMarshall.

I lived up there for 3 years, and believe me, it can be a very harsh and unforgiving part of the world!
It's one of the few places I've ever lived where a mercury thermometer is useless. (mercury freezes at -40)
I'm not sure how well the batteries and screens on the GPS will handle that temperature, never mind any camera mechanisms.

Best of luck. Have a backup plan.

I'm not trying to be negative...but it was the coldest place I've ever lived. At the time anyway, temps in the -50's (F) weren't uncommon. Used to kill car batteries for some reason. I used to carry a Coleman stove in my car, just in case things went wrong.

All kidding aside, I have put a lot time/research into this scheme and have multiple backup plans. I've notified the Cree band councils, RCMP, and the road contractor. I'm carrying a SPOT, flares, as well as two -40 sleeping bags, sternos, double batteries on the bike, first aid kit, tent, extra fuel, etc, etc...

Just counting down the days now

I like that way better than the "extra long johns" plan.

You and Paul Mondor will have plenty to talk about. I must have missed the prelims. What bike and how is it prepared? I will be watching with interest.

Must be a KLR. Only KLR riders have the feeling they and their bikes are 10 feet tall and bullet proof. I wish him safe travels. Will be watching for his arrival to the Peg. Need to meet this man.

    Bingo.

I'll be updating on facebook while on the road but promise to do a rr on ADV as soon as I get back. Probably a SPOT link as well.

Most of Paul's travels were on a BMW.

Last time I talked with him, he was working somewhere up north. Not sure when he checked in here last.
