Would a big scooter like the Burger qualify as a motorcycle? Or a scooter? She wants an automatic and there’s MO WAY she’s getting a AT!

The scooter would need to be registered as a limited speed vehicle (can't go more than 70km/hr), so you should be fine on a 400 burg.
In other words, you'll end up with a full M license and not a modified M license.

Lots of folks go take the gear up course in Thunder bay where you get your M1 test/licence as a graduation item. My wife started on a lowered KLR 650 but the course in TBay they will supply bikes (250-350 type) if you do not have one, but you have to have your own gear. I think a 400 burg is a great bike for her purposes. If she gets the bug and wants more well then you will have a problem if looking for an auto. Expect to pay large for insurance for at least year 1. I had all the bikes insured in my name and her as an occasional driver on one of the cheaper ones, until she got her full M which took a bit of the sting out.

KLR was sold today to a guy named Chris from Marathon. I told him to check out this group so hopefully he joins in.

Hey everyone, my name is Chris, im the new guy ^^^^^ that benwr was talking about.
This is my first motorcycle, so I am very excited. I have wanted KLR for a long time, it just fits me and my riding style, not to mention the area we live in. My Father in law also has a KLR, so ill try to get him on this forum too. We are both out of Marathon, should anyone need anything in our area.

Just dropping in to say Hi! We are hoping to do a ride, either to Duluth, MN or somewhere else, if anyone has any ideas for a 3-4 day tour.

p.s this is also my first use of a forum, so im still learning.

Welcome, The KLR is the jack of all trades and a quality bike for every type of riding. Be warned it does them all well but none really well.
A 3-4 day ride from where you are i would choose around Lk Superior. To Wawa, 101 to Chapleau, 129 and Ranger lake/Searchmont road to SSM. Cross the line, Take the Mission Baymills road over to 123 up to Whitefish Point light house then back and take 123 over to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Stay on 123 and then head north on 407 to Deer Park then stay on that road as it turns into H58 and Grand Marais and follow it to Munising. There is a fabulous twisty stretch of highway in there and a few great stops like the Log Slide overlook and Picture Rocks National Lake shore. From Munising take the less travelled road Hwy 28 to Harvey and Marquette. From Marquette take 41 up to Houghton and then on the Copper Harbour. The last 11 miles into Copper harbour are one of the best rides i have done and I have been through a lot of mountain roads and passes. From there it is back down through to Ashland WI and then on to Duluth and complete your ride around the lake. All of these roads are typically paved or at worst good gravel (Searchmont/Ranger Lake) and are typically light traffic with no freeway speeds. The whole ride will take you the full 4 days for sure but it will be a memorable 4 days that will make either you want more or put up a for sale sign.

    Enjoy the bike!

Welcome Chris. I rode around Lake Superior on my KLR last year....hoping to do it again in August this year. The bike is great for a trip like that.

Lots of great people on this thread and in the KLR thread. If you have any questions....don't hesitate to ask these guys.

    Enjoy the KLR.

It was Jan 2008 when I engaged in a conversation with ZZR_Ron about doing an Ice Breaker run. Ten years have passed, wow does time fly.
I hope some of the new members of the forum pick up the tradition of the Ice Breaker and post photos of their adventures.

Read back to the beginning of this thread. 2006 ZZR_Ron started up a ride on the May Long. It since morphed over time. Many adventures to numerous places.

Nothing planned for next weekend? Perhaps a nip to Ely Saturday, back Monday? I’d be in.

BMW Test Rides this coming Saturday. It’s one of my 3 days out of the year that I volunteer. Apparently it’s what retired people do.... volunteering.

    Hi All,

I'm Rick...also from Marathon, and yes, I just may know that Chris guy up above that bought a KLR recenlty ;) I've been riding for over 30 years and love the sport as a whole! I started out on enduro and dirt bikes, moved to litre streetbikes like the R1 and Gixxer1000, and have now come full circle with a recent purchase of a KTM Enduro 690 R. I'm loving this bike so far and it's really letting me know that I have much work ahead of me to get my offroad skills back up to par with my street skill set. I hope to be on the forum for a long time and look forward to interacting with everyone and possibly meeting up for rides eventually!

    Cheers!
