Our Quebec government (or I should say the ministry of transport) is about to pass a law forbidding kids younger than 9 years old (or shorter than 145 cm) to seat in a sidecar. The rationale is obviously the safety but kids are allowed to be a passenger on a 2 wheel bike as long as they can touch the pegs! Daaaaa ! So many things do not make any sense. The sidecar community (though small) has reacted and had the opportunity to express their concerns but not sure we will be listened. I really hope it won't go through and that we will not be the first in the world to impose an age restriction for sidecars...

as the community of sidecarists is so small, why is this even on the government's radar? here in my state, I have found no information as to limits or requirements except our helmet law. it's a bit of a gray area, although I guess you could say as long as it's not illegal, it's ok. :)

Wondering how they came up with 9 years, or 145cm? I've known a couple of adults that weren't that tall.

There's a "sidecar community" in Quebec?

Where does it meet? In a booth at Tim Horton's? :jack

This is just the beginning. Once this is in place they will bump it to 16 years and 175 cm. Then to 21 years and 200 cm. Then they will finally agree to listen to your appeal and they will delete the age restriction. But keep the 200 cm. For all passengers of all ages.

This guy here will be OK though.

I imagine they are using the same logic as to child seats, sounds like similar standards. They must have nothing better to do.

If it doesn't work out. Hint. Maybe put a seat belt in for the kids and invest in a seat cushion that raises the kid up slightly, and then he/she is a small 9 yr old. Kids don't carry ID. Being a retired peace officer, this one wouldn't be very high on my radar.

Not a big surprise. Lotsa places have age restrictions for motorcycle passengers. I think in WA USA it's 7 years old for riding pillion. With sidecars becoming somewhat more popular I can see new regs popping up.

Yes I think it is their logic, using the standards of child seats. But a 7 or 8 yo kid reaching the pegs is OK as a pillion....As you say, kids don't carry ID so it is totally unclear how the cops will check. Most of us with kids already use seat belts (their safety is still a matter of debate). That same minister also wants to pass a new date for the mandatory snow tires on cars (starting Dec 1rst instead of Dec 15th), making the short season even shorter for motorbikes. :devildog

It is 5yo in Washington. From the time I bought my rig I thought my son the mantra 2 at the zoo and 5 in the sidecar. He was almost 3 at the time. Zoo was free for 2 and under.

My bad. TWO booths at Timmy's. :D

Sadly there doesn't seem to be much of a "sidecar community" here in CO, at least not that I can find. I wish there was, it would probably help me with my build. I'm even on a BMW facebook group but as near as I can tell nobody rides a hack. :(

Too bad, next Mammouths ride is March 16-17th, it will be fun (and cold for sure) :-)
It will put the promotional video in a thread.

Well we lost the fight, the law has been voted. Now forbidden to have kids under 9 yo in a sidecar. Viva banana republic of Quebec !

Sad. My 7 year old niece (lives in another country and generally stays the summer with us in the US) recently said riding in the sidecar was her favorite thing!
Another win for the nanny-mentality of the western world. I must bite tongue or I will be banned or headed toward CSM.

Total bullshit. My son had his own sidecar outfit at 4 years old. A B&S powered mini bike with sidecar that I built.
He and his buddy rode the crap out of that outfit and nobody got hurt. Screw those govt. assholes.

Hell my granddaughters have been riding with me since they were very little. Bicycle helmets and riding around town. Now young teens the oldest will start riding dirt bikes this summer.
