Not much snow left... only a couple banks along the road in shady spots.
Looks like the Lassics road is open too. (May find out tomorrow).

Did you run the whole length TZ? I called MAd River Ranger Station Monday and they told me it was still snow covered on the north slopes (at the summit, about 35 miles from hwy 36??). Headed that way tomorrow and hoping to ride FH1 on Friday, but don't want to risk having to turn back due to fuel limitations.

    Thanks!

BTW, Happy Twilight Zone Day.... :yikes

Nope. Was clear. In the 'old' days there would be snow in the NE draws... until June or...

Yes, we ran it the entire distance... but we didn't take the older route to the summit of SF Mountain on Hwy 36. (which is about 12 miles)
Instead we took the newer route (official FS1 route) down to the Mad River Bridge/Church on Hwy 36.
I suspect the old route is clear of snow too. Pelletreau ridge looks clear down to Hyampom too.

    >" (... at the summit, about 35 miles from hwy 36??)"

Yup. That portion is clear. Only a few snowbanks were left in the shade.
Enough to chill some beers I guess.

Take some side excursions on the south end of FH1... Eight-Mile Ridge, Pilot Creek, 'The Raceway'... the old Oak tree/Trail markers.
The meadows in that area are absolutely gorgeous !!!!

I'm not sure where those are. We usually start up the hill at the church following burgers at MRBB. For the benefit of myself and others, any particular landmarks we should be looking for?

Let's see if this works. This map is down to the 'Old Oak Tree' on 2N17.
Oak Tree has an old arrow engraved on it. Trails take off from there
and go up and down the ridge.

    https://goo.gl/maps/fW1WK5yB2js

Eight Mile Ridge starts just before you reach the fork between the
old sf mountain road and the new one. There is also a 'shortcut'
which runs from FS1 as you come up the hill... nice road to the left.

Pelletreau ridge road starts right across from a 'Sign'... usually
a paint mark for Hyampom on the paved road.

Having difficulty embedding google earth or maps. Will figure it out though!

The girls at the Burger Bar made us some good burgers the other day,we rode out to Ruth Lake from Chico on mostly dirt, only to find the cafe wasnt quite open yet. There was a 4 man group of old guys at MRBB with 20,000.00 fancy ass multistrada/MV/BMW sort of bikes. Word is FH7 is open from Covelo to the valley.

Rode the full length of FH1 last Friday. Other than the usual potholes and some pine needles, it was in great shape. Didn't do any exploring off the main road on this trip, but thinking about going back for a few days to explore around FH1 and some of the nearby roads. What a great riding area....

Looks like the south end... '8 Mile Ridge' running down on the right. (?)
    (Well, I think anyway).

Somewheres near the north end of FH1 I see a well defined powerline road snaking up the far side of the next mountain over towards the coast,I wonder if this can be reached from FH1?

A couple transmission lines come over from the coast... and an underground Gas Transmission pipeline.
You can some ride bits and pieces of it... but not a long distance.

The north one from (what is now FH1) was a good ride. Sigh, but not any more... private land/timberland/dope/gates.
South one... never ridden... but that is pretty much dope country over there.

North transmission line comes up over Kneeland... over Snow Camp Mtn... around the south side of Grouse Mtn.
Runs down Grouse Creek to the South Fork Trinity... and crosses over north of Hyampom.
You can ride a bit of it when you take Sims Mtn Road north of Hyampom (which ends up at Ammon Ridge/Hwy 299).

Yup.... Couldn't find '8 Mile Ridge' on Google Maps, but looked at Benchmark Atlas and sure enuf, there it was. Great vistas to the west from that spot.

TZ - Do you know whether Redwood House, Kneeland, Shower Pass and Mountain View roads are all open between Hwy 36 (Kneeland Rd starting at Bridgeville) and the 'town' of Kneeland?

    Many Thanks!

Yes. I've been across all of them this year.

    Near 8 Mile Ridge.
Arrow Tree. Old bark arrow from the 'government trails' that lead into that area.

Last years fire didn't burn down there.
Up on top (where the wind fanned the flames) lots of SF Mountain looks like this:
