OK, NYPD is at it full tilt. I have been pulled over 3 times in the last two weeks for bike "safety checks". This last time resulted in a ticket for, are you ready, non-DOT sunglasses( I was also wearing a full face helmet BTW with the visor but had put the visor up while I was stopped at the light). I tried to explain to the officer that my sunglasses are ANSI Z87.1, which is what the law requires. No dice. He said since they didn't have a DOT sticker on them they are no good

I am so tired of this:bluduh

I ride AGATT etc. yet in my neighborhood the dirt bikers ride right by the precinct pulling wheelies and the cops do nothing.

It sucks that the only people that stop for those checkpoints are generally law abiding citizens.

If you don't want a ticket just take off like a bat out of hell like the wheeling dirtbikers do. :mulie

I am so sick and tired of cops pulling that eyeglass shit.

I'm ordering a bunch of these glasses http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/nuvograyaflens.html. I called this place and they said all glasses certified ANSI have a label on them.

Has anybody ordered from this place and recommend a pair?

ordered clear and gray. i'll let you know. mostly i wanted a clear pair for riding in the woods - i constantly have my visor up and sometimes when its really shadowy sunglasses are too dark to make out the rocks that jump up and surprise you. they like to hide in the shadows.

i didn't realize you were at the berkshires. i would have said hello otherwise. i was the fool on the 950SE. had a blast on the DS course.

Impossable to comply with the law. If you have a high disposition on your presription eye glasses you can not get safty lenses that do not distort your vision so now you have to use real glass in your safty frames.

You were on a 950!!! Holy shit!!!! :clap:clap I can't imagine what it was like on a 950.

Good point on the clear glasses, I had my cheap sunglasses under my DS helmet on the trails and I ended up losing them (on purpose) 'cause I couldn't see squat. Had to go back to the field and pick up my goggles.

I don't know but when I asked why I was being pulled over because I was a bike he immediately put his hand on his sidearm, WTF.

Well, if your glasses have the ANSI sticker on them then I guess you can go to court and fight the ticket. If the office wrote on the ticket that your glasses are not DOT approved then I don't know why they wouldn't dismiss it.

So when exactly was the American Constitution thrown out?
    Fourth amendment;
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Or was that all just a joke?

There's a requirement for sunglasses to be dot approved? Is this only when you have your visor up?
Please enlighten me, because I had no idea...

The bigger joke is WHY does the D.O.T wankers think they have jurisdiction over whether or not a driver's choice of eyewear needs their approval?... Their need for authority ends when the rider's seeing ability meets the standards they set for all motor vehicle operators.

-If the D.O.T. is in fact correctly enforcing this BS by means of a valid law, they should also be ticketing any cagers who dare to roll the windows down while in motion or drop the roof if they've got a soft-top.

Maybe this is just a new tax?... :becca

They have to display the ANSI Z87.1 sticker which is approved by DOT

Just one question for the person who got stopped at the checkpoint, was the checkpoint at the bottom of the ramp passing Fairway (at the stoplight)? There are two stop signs before you get to the stop light, right?

Yes, that's exactly where the checkpoint was.

I have a copy now of the NYS code for eyewear and it clearly stated ANSI Z87.1, NOT DOT like the Officer was claiming. unfortunately, many ANSI spec glasses have the spec in very small writing on the lens or the frame and the Officer had no inclination of either, a: reading his law book or b. seeing that the glasses I had did in fact comply.

That's why I printed out the information from NYMSTF.org and have it with me on the bike. The cop might not consider it a legal document but at least he'll know that I have done some research on the matter.

One other thing, next time you approach the checkpoint make sure your visor is down. You should've seen the checkpoint when you got on the ramp and stopped at the two stop signs.

When I see Officer Murphy on the HHP/WSH I always get off at the 158th street exit and then get back on so he doesn't stop me.
