We went down to the woods today and found a big surprise.
We went down to the woods today and couldn't believe our eyes.

I've ridden all over the world and seen some weird stuff in odd places, but nothing as weird and unusual as what Shalako-Lin and I came across in Penrose Forest, situated inland halfway between Sydney and Canberra, this Sunday past.

We took trails at random, encountering a few mud holes and the occasional trickle of water across the road. Some rocky sections and the odd bit of gravel but nothing challenging. It was just a nice relaxing ride on dirt trails completly empty of other traffic. Just the way we like it.

The scenery varies from wide and open to the gloom of the pine plantation or the wonderful colours of native bush growth.

As we rode along we noticed a much narrower trail off to our left. The pines grew close together and it looked dark and gloomy down that way. Spooky even. So of course we took that left hand path...and it led us to something quite incredible.
If we had come across a spaceship and two aliens having a smoke and a beer in deck chairs outside it, we couldn't have been more surprised.

For here in the middle of the pine forest we found...this...

No, you're not seeing things and it isn't a photo -shopped image.
There's a solid metal ship hidden along a little used track in the middle of Penrose Forest.
As you can imagine Lin and I were stunned.
It's not like you come across sights like this, in a location like this, everyday, after all.
Who did it belong to and how did it get there? We have no idea.
The engine is still in place inside the boat and the rudder handle still moves the rusted rudder splines at the stern.
This is without doubt the weirdest thing that Lin and I have ever come across on our rides.
The ocean is a long way from this spot and there are only small streams in Penrose Forest, so the boat certainly didn't float there.

Our full ride report from the day is here:

Now let's see some pics of the weirdest things in the most unlikely places that other ADVer's have come across. :lurk

I'm betting it's a backyard project that ran out of steam, or the builder died and his (it usually is a he) heirs wanted to get ride of it. It's not easy to dispose of something like that, a steel boat legally so...they figured dump the mouldy old carpets at the same time.
Just as some people keep motorcycles in barns I suppose. A sailing dream foundered.

Nah... that fallen tree kept them from sailing further, so they abandoned ship.

But this caboose was about 15 miles from the nearest railroad track and town,
and more than 3 miles past the end of the paved road, and 500 yards from the nearest gravel road.
A long ways from any house or anything.

There is a very large portion of a sizable passenger jet sitting in a field not far from my dad's place in OH. It is in too good of shape to have crashed. I'll get a picture of it.

Very interesting! Google maps does show names of some of the trails in Penrose - any idea roughly where you were?

On the eastern side, quite close to the fields you can see in Google Earth.

We were on Stingray Rd at one stage.
A road named Stingray in a forest that has an iron boat? That's kind of odd too isn't it.
