    My '84 is exhibiting the same. Was your fix anything other than to flush the fluid a lot when replacing it ?

    I just brought home an old Nighthawk 450. 1982 CB450SC 8,800 miles on the odometer.
    She runs fine, I've been looking for a project to learn some wrenching on. She didn't cost much, lets hope there isn't too much that needs to be done.

    Hopefully by the time I get it all sorted out all that white stuff will be gone. More importantly, I hope all the sand will be off the roads. That's the real worry this time of year.

    The notorious dead spot in the 450's throttle may or may not still be there.
    If it is, there's a fairly easy fix for it.

    Those are fun little bikes.

    I'm going to be buying an 03 750 from a friend in the next few weeks. I know that the NH is pretty much a pavement bike, but the free spirit deep down inside me is... Can you do dirt or single-track on it with any degree of success? I remember seeing some pics of someone setting up their NH for off-road but I'm not sure I want to spend that much cash or time.

    I took my 96 750 30 miles off road on a trail into yellowstone. It was fully loaded for two months of travel so pretty heavy. I ended up blowing both fork seals. I think you would end up having a lot of little problems like this unless you completely redid the suspension.

    Dirt/gravel roads are fine. Its a bit awkward doing anything beyond that though. Kinda like wearing construction boots while running a marathon... it can be done, but its just not the right tool for the job.

    Yep. Even if you've rebuilt 100 sets of forks, blowing out the suspension on a street bike is still something that sucks.

    Those forks and shocks are even cheapo parts for the street and do so-so on fresh asphalt.

    I didn't pay too much more than that for the bike. I hope I can find a rack a little cheaper.

    I just called for insurance this afternoon: $8.75 a month. Tomorrow I'll register it. The key didn't work on the gas cap so I won't be riding very far until I get that sorted.

    Any overloaded street bike will blow their fork seals after doing 30 miles off-road. :)

    I bet with fresh seals, a normal load, and nice pair of dual sport tires, the NH750 would do just fine on some easy off-road stuff -- certainly just as well, or better, than most modern street bikes.

    Here's my '01 Blackie just out of winter storage.

    I just ordered Progressive springs for the forks, a nice RAM mount/cradle (waterproof) for my Samsung Galaxy S3, and a super nice leather sissy bar bag from some French eBay seller. Once the forks are done, I'll be set for the upcoming riding season. This motorcycle is just about as perfect as I can find, and so low maintenance it's almost too easy! :D

    I probably did 30 miles on dirt roads before this and the bike was fine - the problem is this was a particularly fun dirt road and I started to ride like that.
    I think most motorcycles can go over dirt roads fine, but I found that if I started to ride the bike like it was designed to ever see dirt then it of course would remind me it was not designed for this.

    If I have a need for some aggressive dual-sporting, I'll buy a cheap, used KLR650, otherwise, I have no problem taking my NH750 on some easy single track or logging roads.

    In case anybody is interested, I did a specs comparison of a few motorcycles I used to own, to see how badly the NH-750 stacks up -- and not so bad, and better than a far more expensive Bonneville. Yes, the horsepower and torque figures are crank, not rear wheel.

    The same comparison, except I removed the Bonneville, and added a 2008 KLR650... which, yes, I know is not a fair comparison as it's a single-cylinder dual-sport, but what the hell!

    Hey does anyone have the clutch nut removal tool for 93-03 750's? I ordered one from a guy that was 26mm X 30mm and it seems to be to small. If anyone has one can you get a quick mm measurement for me?

    So I was able to get the 450 registered this morning. First I got insurance, I had to pay the first month: $8.65. Then I went to city hall to pay the Excise Tax: a whopping $6.75. Then to the state BMV: Antique vehicle registration: $15. Along with $25 sales tax. Then I went home and put the new plates on and took a spin around the block. It was just starting to rain and the tires are from 1994 and 1996 (with the front mounted backwards) so I didn't really get in much of a ride.

    I also don't have much gas in the tank and since I have no way to open the cap that sort of limited things, too. So the big decision was whether to have a locksmith try to make me a key or to just go at the cap with a screwdriver. I ended up making an appointment with the locksmith, if he can make a key it might work on the helmet lock, also.

    It was great to ride it, even if I didn't get out of second gear. Everything was smooth, very encouraging.
