Ok, I think I'm going to just add to this thread for all of my short trips to the Valley of Death and surrounding areas from now on.

Prepare for another 'Same Old Story', but different.

    Waking up feeling naked
In my clothes, inside a room that’'s vacant

    Lost my nerve, it’'s unnerving
I know there is something I'’m forgetting

I searched the moon, I lost my head,
I even looked under the bed
I punched the walls, I hit the streets
    I’'m pounding the pavement looking

    I’'m missing you
    I'’m missing you
You'’re not around and I’'m a complete disaster
    I’'m missing you

    Remember? Was our first time
I told you I loved you at the train station
Don'’t forget! Cause it'’s not over
I’m not lost, cuz I'’m just missing you

I searched the moon, I lost my head

I even looked under the bed

I punched the walls, I hit the streets
    I’'m pounding the pavement looking...

    I’'m missing you
    I’'m missing you
You'’re not around and I’'m a complete disaster
    I’'m missing you

    Say hey!

    Well she’'s my bud
    And she’'s my soul
    I get so lost
    Out in the cold

    Feels so far
    Like this lone star
    It gets so hard
    When I’m missing you

    I’'m missing you
    I’'m missing you
You’'re not around and I’m a fuckin' disaster
    I’'m missing you...

All of my favorite mountain passes are closed, so I just head south, fast and hard. Of course I didn't bring rain gear!!

At 2,000 feet on hwy 155 I'm pretty sure I can't make it over the 6,000 foot summit today, I give up sooner rather than later for once.

I went back down to Woody and took the turn for Bakersfield, rewarding road with country I hadn't seen before, too bad I'm soaking wet and miserable.

Took 178 towards Lake Isabella, it's on the verge of freezing in the canyon too...slower traffic use turnouts!, I let everybody around me. It's not a road to mess around with, go down at speed in a right hander and you could easily throw yourself 1,000 feet into the river. Stopped at Nelda's for lunch and a warm up.

My original plan was to make it to the Saline Valley hot springs tonight, but I'm still wet and don't feel like riding in the dark. New plan, get a bunch of firewood in Trona and find a cabin before dark!!

Gotta know where you're going!! Score!!

I was very surprised to find no mouse sign, none, not even one turd. That's very strange, I wonder why? I'm sitting in the remains of daylight reading a book and something starts chattering at me, just having a tantrum!! Gave me a start, but I knew what it was as soon as I saw his bulging eyes...a Miner's Cat!! Also known as the Ringtailed Cat, I tried to get a picture, but he was too fast...fast enough to eat all of the mice in the cabin, thanks little buddy!!

I went ahead and slept in the open on one of the bunks since there weren't any mice. Miner's Cats are very reclusive and rare to see, so I didn't expect to see him back during my stay.

    Long 16 hour day, goodnight.

Nice night of warmth from the woodstove.

I have plans for Saturday night at Panamint Springs Resort, something special, very special. So, what am I gonna do all day long? I know there is a gold mine around here somewhere, let's take a look.

Uh oh, right in the direction I need to go is a family of burro, Jack's can be extremely protective...even violent, I have no desire to get stomped to death by a burro and soon retreat.

While high on the ridge I had spotted this hopper with a road going to it.

So, I grabbed my helmet and the bike to go for a look.

When I got off the bike I heard a most terrifying scream of which I have never heard before in my entire life. It scared the ever living hell out of me!! I gotta quit watching that damn bigfoot show, it sounded like those silly screams and howls they associate with the supposed hairy man. I had brought a super nice pair of mini binoculars with me and soon located the source of the continuing blood curdling screams. It was the Jack and he was pissed off something fierce!!

I had to just ignore him while I looked around, it was very weird to hear his screams echo throughout the canyons. I had talked to a guy many years ago about how to get to the mine here and my earlier ridge route is the only way, but I didn't have anything to do, so I went to see where the zip line went to.

    Gulp...don't fall, don't fall!!

Worked all day on my book and near dark I started packing up.

If you're gonna put trash in the burn barrel you should burn your trash so it doesn't blow away, come on people!!

    Goodbye, Osborne Cabin...we're rolling...

I haven't had a good tumble in years now, let's throw ourselves on the ground.

Gas is spraying out of the top of the tank and out of the vent on my little gas can. The rear tire is about 2 feet off the ground, great, just great. Can't even budge the thing an inch from the right side, scared to damage the right side valve cover, but I gotta get this thing back up right now!! I stood on the rear tire and when I stepped off it stayed on the ground, cool, picked it right up after that!!

Had a super nice dinner at PSR and finished up my book waiting for the 9 PM show.

    More tomorrow, gotta go!!

So, we had to shutdown the bar and get the tables out of the restaurant.

There is going to be a film about the Escape Trail where they hike the route that they believe in. There is some controversy over the route they took in 1849 and my view is different than the film. Anyways...it's still cool to see places I will never hike to. This guys father was the driving force behind their film, but tragically he was killed on his motorcycle just a few weeks after they took the hike in the film...21 years later the film has been completed.

One of the other founders of the film idea.

William Lewis Manly, American Badass...don't forget Rogers, he matched William step for step in the rescue effort.

They are going to have the film for sale on dvd eventually on amazon.com, tonight was a premier slash critique. I enjoyed it very much, met some imaginary internet friends and had some awesome beer, but I've got a long road in the dark to the hot springs.

It took me four hours in the dark through the South Pass to reach the springs, I can make it in 1.5 hours on a 650..the big bike really slows me down, not a bad thing I suppose.

It's Sunday, gonna trade my Hendrix book for something else at the book exchange and relax for the day.

It's always tough to leave such a wonderful place. I hardly ate anything that I had brought with me and I gave everything I had left to Georg and Ria, the camp hosts.

Loaded up and down the road I soon reach the North Pass...brrrr.

I bought a hot spring book at the gas station in Big Pine and was flipping through it when an Austrian guy walked up and started talking to me. He's traveling with his gigantic camera, asks me about the bike, asks me what I do for a living and said, "Ya, I thought so...could tell right away.". Sent me down the street to check out this guys hot rod shop.

I wish it was my Willys, still has the split bench in the front...I must find one for my wagon!! Other cool stuff there:

Many 8,000 foot passes today and I'm frozen by the time I get to Bridgeport. Hopped into my favorite warm up spot.

Last fuel at the Nevada border, tried toe warmers taped to my fingers...kind of worked. I swear this is the last time I do this without heated gear of some kind.

Took my dirt shortcut over to Minden and hwy 88.

Made it into South Lake Tahoe for some pizza, it was down to 17 degrees already...the final run over the hill is gonna suck bad.

Another fantastic trip!! The bike did great, I snagged the idle screw with my boot when I fell down and threw off my sync a little bit, need to fix it and shorten it like I had already done to the right side. It's nice to have an 1150 that is as light as a KLR, didn't have to unpack a thing to pick it back up.

    Thanks for reading and posting!!!
