After returning from a long road trip to Nordkapp and Murmansk, the 990 had an oil analysis done. In a four week period this bike covered near enough 7000 miles, putting it rather far past the recommended 4500 mile interval specified in the service schedule. Given that this happened, and the interest that some have expressed in extending their service intervals beyond 4500 miles outside of warranty, I thought I would share my findings. The engine was run up to temp, and had a sample pulled from the middle of the dry sump by syringe immediately after. The bike is a 2011 990 Dakar and had ~33000 miles on it before the trip, and now has ~40000 (~64000km). During the trip I kept the oil level above the max line by about a cm (it's a dry sump so why not) and added just under 1 litre of 10W60 oil in total. Whilst the brakes, chain, valves, cooling system etc may require additional attention, I'm not concerned that the bike has covered this distance on the same oil.
