One simple question on 990 Adv valve check

    Hi everybody,

    Right after our Transfagarasan&Transalpina trip, we were having 1 free week in Sofia and I wanted to leave the bike ('06) to the dealer for a valve check & adjustment.

    Today I took back the bike and they told me that my bike was in fantastic condition.

    I diagnosed that they haven't touched the crashbars at all and when I questioned I found out that they did not remove the fuel tanks as well. They told me that they have just removed the airbox (?) and did the job. (?)

    Altough I have two LC8's I have never done valve check by myself and somehow wasn't sure there to argue.

    And I had to pay them extra for checking my "spark plugs" (!)

    Altough I have never done this valve job by myself, I have read almost all the articles before. It seems quite difficult/impossible to check the valve clearances without removing the fuel tanks and crash bars.

    Now dear fellas, I want to hear your valuable comments before I send my complaining letter ( I don't know if they care) to KTM Austria.

    Is it possible to check the valve clearances without removing the fuel tanks on a KTM 990 Adventure???

    From my experience it is almost impossible to remove the air box and fuel injectors without removing the tanks and then even more impossible to remove the valve covers and actually get a feeler gauge in there to check the valves.

    In my opinion I do not believe they checked you valves.

    I agree with the two comments above. I'd say there is no way to accurately check the valves without taking the tanks off. Taking off the airbox lower (the cover would be easy) and throttle bodies would be next to impossible without some seriously trick tools. Setting the cams up in the right position without being able to see the marks seems unlikely. And as previously said, I can't imagine reaching down to get a feeler gauge in there from above the tanks.

    It's sad that a dealer would take advantage of a customer like this.

    I just adjusted mine a few weeks ago. Removed tanks and all. Not saying you couldn't,but i don't think so....

    No can do!

    Removing the TB's without access through the side airbox "triangle" windows is next to impossible.

    did this for both 950 and 990, if there is a miracle solution found by that dealer, then pls share with us!

    Dealers a lying bastard. As others said no way could you time the cams properly, even if you got it apart you'd never get the throttle bodies back on.
    Sue the shit out of them.

    There are numerous reasons why it cant be done but one of the first problems is that you cant remove the lower airbox/throttle bodies without disconnecting the fuel line and big grey wiring plug, and they are on opposite sides.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Of course it is not possible to access without removing the tanks and other parts.

    It can't be a misunderstanding because they were quoting me fixed price for checking and mentioning an extra price for each shim to be used.

    physically IMPOSSIBLE to disassemble to be able to get to the valves AND change the shims and then REASSEMBLE without removing the tanks..... Just isn't going to happen. Complete BS if they said that they did perform the work.

    "charged for checking plugs" ???? WTF ???? They 'should' have removed the spark plugs for the valve check/adjust so that they could turn the engine over by hand ~easily~.... besides that, the OEM style spark plugs are 'side gapped' therefore USUALLY there is no 'maintenance' here.

    If they are a authorized KTM dealer, then KTM Austria should know about this.

    Yes, I knew all these and now I have many solıd conformations. Thanks for all messages.

    Now I need to reach KTM Austria somehow. Seems like it is even more difficult than doing the valve job with fuel tanks in place! :deal

    Ask for your money back. We had a BMW dealer here that used to do the same thing. They called it the 'Sunshine Tune-Up'. They would wash your bike, change the oil, let it dry in the sun, then charge you for a full service.

    Yes, I've got my money back. Straight from the mechanic! He seemed like he wanted to close the chapter.

    I haven't seen the shop director yet. We will talk face to face in my next visit to Sofia...
