Read your South Africa review. Very well done. Now you get to play on the same bike in CA. Very envious. Enjoy.

Will you be teaching at the March 22 Rawhyde school? I'll be there for 4 days. If so, would love to chat with you about the new GS. I'm going to SA for two months with my 2012 Rallye in October. Don't think a new bike makes sense before a long trip so far from home. But.......

Enjoy your travels and hope we can meet in person.

In fact I will be there James, Lets clink drinks and chat…!

I’ve been running like mad trying to sort out the final tour route for the ‘One World. One GS’ Tour. Lots of logistics to cover… But, it’s coming along nicely… So far the plan is to tackle some Pacific Coastline, San Francisco, Death Valley, Vegas, etc.

For those of you that can make it, we will be having a Launch Party for the tour at Long Beach BMW Motorcycles on Wednesday, March 6th, beginning at 3pm. Just a chance to chat it up with the folks on the tour and check out the bikes…

We will also be having a Wrap Party at the RawHyde Ranch on Saturday, March 16th from 12-6pm… Again, more opportunity to chat, have a bite, all that good stuff…!

More to come as the tour launches. Until then!

You ask for reviews, you get... Silly videos! At least until we stop long enough for me to put pen to paper...

The tour goes well, in Cambria, CA today... Heading North toward Santa Cruz... And, you didn't hear it from me; But those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area might want to make lunch plans at Alice's Restaurant this Saturday, as I hear a certain pair of water-cooled GS's might just be stopping by...

    Rock on!

I found out after Eric, the frog, posted pics and saw a video. Too bad, I had nothing going on a that tie, I would have easily made it to the dealership. Felt so bad.

Won't be attending your vent at RawHyde. My cruiser is not capable to go up your driveway, nor is my Benz. :becca:baldy. Last time I lucked out 'cause no one was coming from the opposite side.

    Hey Fellow Adventurers,

Still on tour, running like mad. Awesome times! 1,400 Adventure miles on the new Water-cooled GS's thus far, and not a single issue. Not even a flat. HOpe I'm not cursing the last couple days with that announcement.

We are leaving Vegas today, heading toward Twentynine Palms. Tomorrow we head to RawHyde and an epic wrap-up party (to which you are certainly invited to...).

In the interim, BMW has begun releasing the official photos and video of our US Tour. Updates will occur daily. Good stuff!

I have to ask a tire question. I know you said you're not the best guy to talk tires but you're one of the few who have ridden with the new Karoo 3 tires. How do they feel on tarmac? I think you mentioned that you rode in SA with both street and off-road tires. Did you notice much additional noise or vibrations when switching to the Karoo 3? Did you feel confident in hard corners with the Karoo tires or did you feel you needed to back off the pace? How were they off road and what kinds of conditions do you think they are best suited for?

I know this isn't a tire thread but I believe these tires were designed specifically with this bike in mind. I would love to hear how the combo works. If you have any thoughts on how they would work on your personal GSA, I would love to hear that as well.

OK we knew you are a nut but seems you found your match eh? :rofl

We ARE waiting for (real) additional comments about the bike.

    Wow. Just Wow.

I recently returned from the One World. One R 1200 GS Tour with BMW, and am still reeling from the experience. It was, in a nutshell, the best tour I have ever been a part of.

Now, let me qualify this a bit… For those of you that know me, you know that I basically lead Motorcycle Tours for a living. RawHyde keeps me quite busy in this regard. And, it’s usually an epic experience. It’s also a lot of work, managing a group of riders day-in and day-out. The raw logistics involved in keeping people safe, fed, rested, entertained, and generally in a state of perpetual joy are staggering. Doing this properly takes a team of experienced professionals, from the person on the phone negotiating hotels and restaurants, to the guy maneuvering the chase truck, and so on. No two tours are the same, but ALL will find a way to bite you if you don’t mind the details.

My role in this dance is a small one… And enough to leave me mentally and physically exhausted. If I’m not on tour, you can probably find me face down on a pillow-top somewhere.

So in a way, being asked to join the “One World. One R 1200 GS” US tour was an extension of my day-to-day activities. I would be showing a group of riders some good times on motorcycles, taking them to some of the best riding spots in California and beyond. Good times, as always!

So on Thursday, March 6th, 2013 a group of riders, support, and media specialists are meeting for the first time in Long Beach, California. In total, there are 8 tour participants:

    - Eric (France) – ‘One World. One R 1200 GS’ Tour Facilitator
    - Stéphane (France) - Winner of the ‘One World. One R 1200 GS’ tour contest
    - Ulla (Germany) - Photographer
    - Sebastian “Basti” - Logistics and support truck driver (& Ulla’s Hubby)
    - Romain (France) - Videographer
    - Jim (Jersey) - BMW Motorrad USA
    - Tim (Germany) - BMW Motorrad Germany
    - And me, Shawn (Californ-i-a) - US Tour Guide.

Upon meeting them all, something strikes me about the general attitude of the group. Normally there is a sense of reserve amongst my customers, a time of quiet assessment of one another (yes… Kind of like what dogs do, but without the sniffing of buttocks). Usually this wears off in a day or two, and friendships begin to form.

But these folks—most of which have never met—seem to bypass the first step and go straight to the “Friends” part. They are extreme in their sense of comfort toward one another, offering grandiose hugs and sharing their excitement about the days ahead. This has the makings of a great tour.

Being the US ambassador to these folks, I feel it prudent to expose them to a few of our national customs. As riders exchange names and get to know one another, I go to my bike, crack open my side case, pulling from it a leathery icon of United States Culture.

“Anyone want to play catch with a football?”

They are all over it. Soon the parking lot of Long Beach BMW is full of foreigners, trying like hell (funniest thing I ever saw) to toss a regulation sized football to one another. Clearly this is not a sport they are accustomed to… But they stay with it, tossing the pigskin back and forth, trying (and failing) to avoid the multitude of expensive cars parked nearby. Ha!

After a good 10 minutes of this, it is time to change things up. Basti appears, spinning a raggedy looking sphere on his finger.

    “Soccer Anyone?”

Uh oh. Now it’s MY turn to look silly.

Basti and Roman begin knee-kicking and chest-bunting the ball to one another, lofting it to and fro with practiced precision. They kick it to me, and I land a shot with my Rallye 3 boot… Right into a Porsche.

    Oops.

Romain laughs. “It is ok my friend! It is just hard with those boots. We will teach you, if you will show us how to throw fooootball? Yes?”

    “Dude! In!”

We fiddle and play, waiting for the afternoon crowds to gather. Soon we join the Long Beach BMW tour party, handing Stéphane the official keys for his steed; A 2013, liquid-cooled BMW R 1200 GS. Tonight, the ride begins!

If you're worried about top speed and jumps, you're not in the market for a GS.

OP, the trip sounds amazing, can't wait to get more details.

Thanks for pointing this out. After 11 years with GSes I think I can decide myself.

This is a 125HP bike. I am curious about its real v-max (and rest assured I will find out what it is when I get the chance). If someone posts it, make sure to NOT read it. :)
(no irony intended, but is your MS in the same market as GS? Because people were indeed curious when an 150HP bike with super-motard setup and wheels, claimed "enduro" capabilities - have you ridden it to its v-max?)

As for jumps I am seeking more info about the capabilities of the new suspension. The last one was fantastic for touring, very capable for off-road, but had specific limitations (and weird sounds to go along). Haven't heard the same about the new one. Jumps are one of the best ways to check suspension (going down from a wheelie also... but sorry for bringing this up, I shouldn't, because this is a GS after all, right? :D).

I enjoyed tracking the videos and updates on BMW website very much :) I look forward to reading more from the inside man point of view :)

Out of shear curiosity, how did the tradeoff go when it comes to riding vs. media event ? Was there alot of 'Ok, wait here, we'll set up the cameras, now ride, nah, one more time' stuff, or the media people actually managed to run circles around You, so You guys just did the riding and they managed to film it without spoiling the experience ?
