Kicking off my ride report for a long-awaited trip from my home, near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to the far North of Alaska.

All going well, my KTM 1290 SA and I will cover some 11,500 miles over the course of around 30 days, travelling over some of the most scenic and remote roads in North America.

Departure for Calgary will be Friday 18th May. I'll be booking it up to Calgary then taking a few days to fly to New York for my daughter's college graduation. The trip will resume on Saturday 26th. I need to be back home on or about 24th June.

Here's a map I created when planning my route. I will travel "up" on the East side of the Canadian Rockies and back "down" on the West side (sort of.)
    Route idea 2.JPG

I'll be sharing this report with family and friends (and anyone else interested.) The report should include lots of photos and include a tracking map and other resources for those who want to follow along.

    It's a fantastic ride...
    ENJOY!

Be sure to go through the Homeland Security hoops to put your feet in the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay. PB is now a national asset/security location. Tours to PB and up to the AO must be arranged in advance and a government issued photo ID (ie., LADL) is required. A shame to go that far and not get your feet wet!

Be sure to look for the dudes power washing the hotel (if you can call it that; more of a dorm) and give them $25 to power wash your bike (with a gentle spray) to knock off the calcium chloride.

Power wash your bike when you get back to Fairbanks. While I thought I would never power wash my bike, it is the only way to knock off the CC buildup. A hose end sprayer will not do the job.

Even so, you will experience "Dalton Dust" creeping out of cracks on you bike for as long as you own it.

    All good memories!

Have fun...you have to average almost 400 miles a day for 30 days. Will be more with your flight to NY for the graduation...whew...my butt would be toast...enjoy.

I have that all worked out (I hope). 30days is fromCalgary so only +-9200 miles or a little over 300 miles per day. I averaged almost that much on the TAT on a DR350 - some days quite a bit more. The first three days to Calgay are 700-800 miles each. I figure if my butt survives that, the rest will be cake.

That 1290 should gobble up miles with pure aplomb, (I've been reading alot of Reader's Digest). I will be behind you at a slower pace thumping away on my 650. My departure date is June 5th. Maybe we will cross paths, ride safe and have fun.

Just curious...have you built in any rest/inclement weather/trip fatigue days where you won't be covering such mileage?

A couple of days for side trips that I can skip, if necessary. Then I have a slow route home with a couple of days to spare so could afford to lose 4 to 6 days at a pinch. For most of the trip, I only have to average around 300 per day. Over 8 or 10 hours of riding, that is fairly easy, even allowing for photo stops, etc.
