I have an Oregon 450 that has no maps installed. I bought primarily to geocache with the kids. We did that with no real need for maps.. my son and i have moved up to dirt bikes and up till real recently alway road where i knew where i was and how to get home.. But we have ventured off to unknow part and if i had not had somebody with me last weekend that knew where we were i might not have made it back.

So enter the ole 450 into the discussion...
What will i gain if i buy the topo maps?
Will I still be able to find my way back to camp without topo maps?
What else do i need to know...

btw i have zumo on the the street extensively logging thousands of miles so i am not new to gps or motorcycles... just new to dirt and off road navigation .

I just sold one of those. open street maps were great, and the topos I downloaded for free from online sites worked fine, but the screen was too tiny to be of any use with them. it required tons of zooming in/out all the time, so I just defaulted to cnna (way way way over priced!) or osm , , I honestly don't remember a difference other than osm was up to date.

if you can handle caching with the small screen and lack of connectivity, you'll do fine using it with street maps or tracks for figuring out where you are.

    short version: not worth it

I will second ohgood on this one. There is no need to buy the Garmin maps. I use my Oregon 300 on/off road as well as a good bit of hiking with free maps.
