So what is this forum all about you ask? Well I'm glad you asked…

Well it's about those crazy dreams we get from time to time to build a unique combination of motor headed capabilities into something real, something unique, something truly 'out there'. To make manifest what usually starts out as a crazy idea, and just gets worse from there.

We can all appreciate the creativity and ingenuity needed to craft a one off vehicle that starts out as little more than an idea but becomes WAY more as the pursuit continues. And this forum is meant to help engender these notions, especially with the help of the creative talent pool and experience that we have on tap here in ADVland.

Now this isn't a forum about farkelization or how I added horns or lights or a fuse block to my ride. Or a myriad of other similar 'how to add doo-dads to my ride' threads. No this forum is about the art and dedication (and dare I say it insanity) required to make a vision come true.

We don't WANT to define in terms of specifics what does or doesn't qualify as a build thread. Mostly because there will always be exceptions to those rules. But we all will know it when we see it. Because there will be a portion of the OP's creative identity embedded within his creation for all to see.

And the one clearly obvious motor contrivance that IS the exception to the rules here are Hacks. And since we already have a Hacks Forum, and a mighty fine forum it is too, we'd leave the decision in the hands of the thread initiator as to where his thread should reside.

So to paraphrase a previous forum title suggestion
'If you build it, we will come, and watch, and make oh so helpful suggestions, AND drink your beer.'

While some restorations will have a few updates such as electronic ignition, mikuni carbs, etc, they really aren't like building a special. I'd say they belong in Old School.

And if anyone wants to come over and wash parts and sand rust, I'll buy the beer :freaky

This was my first question too. In the coming winter I will be starting to completely restore my Late Grandfathers 1967 BSA. And would like to share the progress of the project with my fellow inmates. No there won’t be much if any custom fab of parts but there will be no doubt unexpected surprises, some figuring out of problems and a heck of a lot of assembly

Old school is a good form for talking about keeping your old bike running and how to find parts and what not, but I think if you’re taking a bike down to its frame or rebuilding the motor or some other major undertaking it qualifies and a "project"

Ultimately it will come down to inmate discression and perhaps Mod intervention as to what qualifies as a project and gets posted where.
But things like “Iron socks does a brake job on his BSA” or changes the oil belong is Old school.

If takes more than a few weeks without procrastinating or requires you adding beer as a major expense consideration to the project, here should be Ok.

The original intent of SAR (builds forum) was to provide a place for those who create a new vehicle from a bunch of parts. It isn't meant to 'compete' with the maintenance functions of restorations nor the farkelization threads. The one idea that seemed to differentiate a build from a restoration was the changing of function or venue of the motor contrivance, ie. from a street bike to a dirt bike, or a making extensive changes to the layout. In other words making the bike into something other than what you started out with.

And this distinction is not carved out of stone and if there are sufficient extensive restorations (and people WANT to have their threads listed here instead of their usual forum) we might accommodate such requests. But the mod head collective will need to bang this about a bit, just because we can. :deal

    Ask and you shall receive.

There will be a re-direct left in place in Hacks as well.

It'll take us a bit to get it sorted, but I feel like we're off to a great start. I've learned a bunch of stuff and have seen things I couldn't have imagined.

How about a sub forum Here called " Hacked Together" so those that come over from the Hack forum can find the builds that relate to this sub set of the biking world.

This is brought up from discussions on the Hack forum.

Could I get my 12x12 build thread moved back over with The other sidecar builds in the HACKS forum please ...I think more sidecar people will see it there since the other sidecar builds are there.
