    So funny,
Those kids I mentioned playing hide n seek...they came to say goodbye and I had to go thru all this trip report for them explaining all the places I've seen... so cute :thumb

Went through Barcaldine to Karumba last year(on way to OCR Cape yorke), lots of bends and no road trains , if you take all the dirt roads. Outback Jack has a story to tell about one bend north of Longreach, that had a bit of sand on it. Its great to get out that way thanks for shareing.:clap:clap

I came through outback QLD a few months ago. I couldnt believe the amount of dead wildlife and the cats. Ive never seen to many ferral cats. They wern't scared of the car and twice they popped their heads out of the dead roos guts to make sure we were gone.

Careful of the dirt around that area. ANY rain and your in for trouble. Dont ask how I know.

Yeah, i can imagine that the dirt route might just be a little more interesting...

I heard there's 2 to 3 feral cats per square km in the outback, quite scary to think...:huh

    8 September, Cloncurry to Karumba.
2700kms clocked up in the past 8 days...only today did I start getting a bit sore on the Duke, I think more out of boredom brought on from the seamingly never ending long and straight roads, despite some amazing scenery...

Today I completed the final leg of the first part of this ride...arriving at the Gulf of Carpentaria.

    Some captured moments....

First stop, about 55km out of Cloncurry...gopro wouldnt turn on...needed to remove/re insert battery and it went ok...

    Little pub on its own...

Probably cant see it clearly, but the road disappears in a straight line into the horizon :lol3
    [IMG]

Although i did see some mounds and there were THREE bends in 500km :rofl

    And lots of ant hills...

Then I arrived at Burke & Wills Roadhouse, a nice relax + chat...

Continued along a few single lane sections, although only a few caravaners thought they were roadtrains and didnt care to share the lane...only a few oncoming encounters, I just slowed enough to anticipate a jump into the dirt, which i did for a few nomadic greyheads... otherwise it was a happy wave from most others oncoming...
Arrived in Normanton..wow...I made it..rather easily actually...trip meter just ticked over on 200km when i stopped for this pic, turned on and fuel light came on, some headwinds, some 130+cruise all probably contributed...

Lovely town, everyone seems to rather tanned

    And The Croc...
Apparently a Lady caught the croc, of which this is a life size replica, I wonder if hubby ever dared to say NO to this 'Lady' ? :lol3

A little way further I arrived at Karumba...how thrilled I was, also very F#@n hot...34c, once in shorts at the bar I was fine..

That was sunset on my first night on the Gulf...settled into a battered Barramundi, prawns with a mornay sauce on salad, a few southerns, chat and here I am...

    You sound familiar sonny boy.

Yeah, bloody long way,but I'm very pleased with the Duke's performance, it's hardly stressing doing a cruise around 110-130, used about half a cup oil, but that was due at the start...overall its now crossed 26,000km (16,000Mi) and I'm oiling the chain every 500k or so...
Havent needed the extra fuel, but glad I got it..
Standard seat is the first in my memory that hasnt hurt tender..old butt. 10points to KTM?
Tyres are clearly squared off, suspension, although rear is set one off hardest, its still very soft, no harshness; buzzing seems mild in both pegs and bars, no numb/sore limbs, although one needs a workout:huh

Once I get the Duke into the mountains near Cairns it'll get a workout, sort of looking forward to that...

A great report indeed. You mention fuel consumption a little earlier. I only get around 50 -55 UK mpg which is way down on the figs quoted in the mags (78mpg).

The seat is really as good as you say, which is unusual coming from a company known for making hard seats :eek1

Thanks for taking the time to post. It's great to get the variety. I've done a bit of a family motorcycling blog. I've posted a couple of my rides over the last 2 years in the Alps and the Pyrenees, both on the Duke. Feel free to check it out. Apologies for the rest of the guff but I haven't worked out how to isolate the posts etc.

Yeah, Teabear, i can see them getting 78mpg, if you stay under 4000rpm,probably dont exceed 80kmh... I got 76 on one of my tanks, i think the one where I did hang around 80/90kmh due to excessive wildlife, which helped then because it was I think 210 between fuels:eek1

Glad I left that Givi touring screen at home, pity the expense but with temps in the mid 30's (c) getting the wind thru the jacket is nice, and I'm wearing a bmw system6 helmet, works best in open wind, virtually noiseless, glare free tinted visor inside is great into the sun, vents actually cool a wide area, and the optional chin pads cut out or let in more breeze...only issue is the straps cut into my ears:ear and get rather painful over time...but hopeful it'll bed in over time... oh, on a funny nite, the padding creates a double Mohawk on your hair, so you look real weird (well, in my case... weirder...) :lol3

Here's the view from this morning, 3 more days of this....

Doing a crocodile expedition tomorrow, hopefully come back with my arms and legs:rofl

Missed the Sunrise but saw the end of some facinating clouds they call Morning Glory, unique to only a few places on earth...
Dont expect to see them but hopeful in the last 2 sunrises I have here...

Took a boat trip, only got a glimpse of a croc, but lots of birds, crabs and a nice lunch...disapointing on the crocs though. I'll see them in Cairns no doubt.

Well, little else occured on another relaxing day seeing sunrise, watching sunset with a barra on the plate... who's complaining:lol3

    Thursday 12 Sept.
Leaving Karumba 8am, topped fuel in Normanton to avoid the risk (225 km till fuel). Already hotting up, about 33c.

Coming across a few good roadwork detours, not too muddy or traffic'd...

Saw a car in the distance along the neverending straights, slowed down to see if they were ok, just as well, from a brisk cruise (x30) I slowed enough to spoil this lone policemans radar attempt...oh well, we waved each other gidday and back to my enjoyable cruising speed...(forgot, shouldve stopped for a pic!)

Arrived in Croydon, middle of nowhere...nice town, got fuel, got coffee and had a good laugh with the 3 backpacker girls working the cafe, 2 brits and 1 irish, all sweeties...

Got real excited, saw my first real bend in the road!!

Crossed a huge river, dry as a bone...the water the must have up here in the wet season would be amazing, most of the route I've covered would be underwater, thats lots...

After a nice 370 or so km I arrive at my stop for the day, Georgetown...
Interesting tower, havent researched this one yet but its historical..
Facts: Built in 1889,the Cumberland Tower was built to disperse smoke from the large steam driven engines powering the batteries that crushed gold bearing stone, the area peaked in gold production in 1886,with 11,500 ounces. There's a bit of info :D
    [IMG]
Duke does a few km on dirt, boy its getting hot, now 34c...

Neat Motel just before the township..aircon blasting, relaxing in the shade now...only 12% humidity, not looking forward to the 62% in Cairns tomorrow, but the twisty roads will compensate

Cool morning in Georgetown, soon to be 38c, I'll hope to be on my way into the cool tablelands by that time...

End of the peaceful outback, into the bustle of Cairns, relatives and traffic...:lol3

    Friday 13 Sept.
Not too worried about black friday...I took off from Gerogetown and headed toward the East...

Got excited when I come across some bends in the road, a sign of things to come

Passing through Mt Garnet, up to Atherton and down into Cairns via the twisty bends of the Gilles Hwy, some nice views..
    And twisted fun...

Come across a truck...such a dampner, but soon put him behind and continued the fun...

Landing in Cairns, meeting my brother, getting a Harley escort to my rest stop for the next week or so.

Good to be back on some twisty roads... I'll be doing day trips from here discovering the fun rides and scenic views while its not stinking hot, although 30c/70%humidity isnt as mild as I'd like.... the foods good, thanks Bro :lol3

Yeah, its fun sharing the journey, and I get a buzz out of seeing the same after a time, amazed I've done it on the 690.

Driving on any side of the road here is a challenge:lol3 ,

Currently in steamy hot Cairns, today I'm taking a ride up to Port Douglas with my 2 brothers, one has just turned up on a new (to him) cruiser, other bro has a HD electra glide... competition for the Duke on the twisty roads:lol3 I think I'll go in front

Here's two of us parked in the esplanade yesterday, good views walking past...

    Sunday 15 September...
    3 Brothers ride Port Douglas...

Surprise surprise...visiting my 2 brothers here in Cairns,North Queensland I find one of them turns up on a bike, first time back after about 30+years...loves it...
So, first time since maybe the 1970's we ride together as a family...

2 cruisers and a Duke, an unlikely alliance :lol3

But we left early in the humid heat that I'm finding very hard to take!!

And head up the beautiful scenic coast road up to Port Douglas..
Traffic was ok, but crowds and heat in Port Douglas got a bit much, drinks under breezy palm trees watching sailing boats glide past helped ease the pain.
    Great views..

After coming back and another few drinks 2 of us took a ride up to a dam, thru a winding tight road, cooled off with city views...sh#t its a big place here!

    Nice road in..

    The big city,viewing south..

So, after almost getting heat stroke, got home to another round of drinks...
I'm missing the hot/dry outback already!! But, I'll enjoy some of the local roads before heading home via inland again...

    Good fun :D

Zipped out early to the KTM shop here in Cairns, a nice friendly bunch who seem to care, Wayne Leonard M/cycles, dont mind promoting a good thing.
Anyway, they had a tankbag for my Duke, and I found a battery bacpac for the GoPro, all done at a very good price too..
That done, I took off past the "Pyramid", a hill just south of Cairns looks very much like one...

Then onto the Gilles Hwy, seeing some bushfires, or backburning, filling the area in smoke...getting rather warm by now, was glad to hit the mountains...

Checked to see if the GoPro was working, at about 120kmh !! Notice the power lines, all wobbly
    [IMG]
..silly me put an extra little arm to raise the camera, but it turned into a shakey camera, only did a 30second timer photo up the hill, getting about 80pix, only 1 really coming out not wobbly, pity.

But, nice views along the top roads up toward Atherton, then Mareeba and down via Kuranda...

Stopped or a cig/drink at a lake, checked the camera...
    Ugly mugshot LOL

Then also stopped at a curtain fig, large strangling fig, very impressive, and cool in the forests...

Brilliant ride up the Gilles, clean fresh surface enjoying a brisk pace occasionally testing the abs...then through hot Mareeba and into cool Kuranda and down some very nice fast bends, although everything up here is 60kmh speed limited, there was a car in front from Kuranda who I left there, moving at a very nice pace...

Then back thru the hot traffic...new tankbag worked great but the Duke stalled twice in traffic, not showing very hot temps either, just stopped dead, restarted straight away, a bit conerning...might ride around the city tomorrow see if it plays up...

Otheriwse a wonderful day ride around the rainforests of North Queensland...
