Penny-Tech valve stem pull-thru tool

    OK... it's not really penny-tech. It will set you back about 5 bucks and a half hour of you're time.

    Earlier today, Tholand (KTMtalk) made a post asking about anyone who might know a fellow that made tube type valve stem pull-thru tools. That original thread is here.

    We’ve all seen stem pullers before… from leverage bars to cable type pullers, but they all have one thing in common, they attach to the outside of the valve stem, making them pretty useless for motorcycle wheels… unless you’ve got those rims with huge, oversize stem holes and the rubber grommet that pops into them.

    Years ago… back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and every tire had a tube, there was such a tool, readily available, that could be used to pull the valve stem thru the hole by screwing it into the core threads, rather than over the stem threads. But, much like dinosaurs and 24.9 cent a gallon gas… those days are over.

    Back to Tholand’s post. I responded, thinking of the current outer thread type pullers, not really knowing what he was talking about.
    Then, I did a little research (after the fact of course) and found that a gentleman was making a motorcycle specific tool.
    The down side is that his e-mail and the website I found the tool at are defunct.

    So, I decided to make my own. To make a long story less long… I thought I could make a tool with a valve core. That was wrong headed thinking on my part.

    On to plan B.

    I went down to the Taiwanese auto parts store and bought a cheapy valve stem tool.

    Then I pressed the two pieces apart and proceeded to drill out the part I needed... and toss the part I didn't.

    Looking around, I couldn’t find any braided stainless cable, and I couldn’t find any hi-test fishing line… probably because I don’t fish.
    But I did find my trusty spool of safety wire… Eureka!

    And this is the finished tool… well, OK, it’s the first finished tool, the last pic is the finished finished tool, but with fancy rubber hose over most of the safety wire.

    The hole is big enough (and chamfered on the ends too) for the safety wire to slide thru easily, but not big enough for it to pull out when its doubled over.

    That’s about it. Thanks Toland for pulling an idea out of the deep dark recesses of my cobweb filled brain and making me go spend a whole 4 bucks and ½ hours time in the shop. Now I got a tool that I always want when changing a tire… but never had (or at least haven’t had in about 25 years) until now.

    Mine is still in the bag LOL. But I have something to show you.

    It has a core remove/install tip! Though it isn't knurled.

    Why not a little bit of safety wire around a valve core?

    (more of cheap-ass klr solution)

    ummm.. I change all my own tyres and have never had a problem getting the valve through the hole.. nor thought how neat a valve puller would be...

    I fit the tube inside the tyre first, line up the hole on the rim.. poke the valve through the hole.. tighten the nut.. fit tyre..

    what aren't you guys doing that you need a special tool to fit the tube ???

    I am not trying to be a smart ass... just interested why you'd need a tool...

    It would come in handy when changing a tube I would think...not necessarily a tire depending on your method. I know I'm gonna make one of these to carry in my fender bag. Nice work, Creeper. Just so happens I have one of those cheap core tools in the garage that never gets used...until now.

    I just use my lever to lift the backside of the tyre up.. line the valve up with the hole and down she pops...

    Never knew people had "issues" fitting them...

    Oh well.. great tool anyways..

    ditto, i've never had any issues with it either...


    until the other day. took about 35 minutes and 2 skinned knuckes before that joker popped thru.

    i'll be copying this fella's excellent idea this evening, for sure!

    About the response expected. A bit of :thumb ... and a bit of :huh

    It's just a tool, and like most tools... value is in the hand of the user.
    It's all a matter of what you've experienced in your little bite of the world that determines a tools value.

    For them what like it and will duplicated it, good on ya’… and I hope you never have to use it on a mountainside single-track in the snow.
    For them that don’t see the value... no worries.

    :lol3 :lol3 I totally agree.. and as mentioned.. am not trying to be a smart ass.. it's just that I am intruiged that you have had trouble enough seating the valves that you designed a tool for it.. which is an awsome tool.. just I never heard of people having trouble fitting them before.. but there are obviously guys out there that do have trouble.. and I have not been listening hard enough..and to them.. this tool is awsome...

    Because if there is an angle someone finds to make a buck, they'll use it, and marketers figure out a way of convincing us we need it. I'm still trying to figure out why we need to wear gloves while working on our bikes. Used to be a time when a little grease under the fingernails was worn proudly, like a merit badge, or a symbol of passage. Nope, I can't see a reason to use one of those fancy stem-pullers. If you install your tubes and tires correctly, you'll never need them. :wink:

    I was able to take the stem part out of a valve stem, then replaced it with a piece of safety wire - and to make it extra pennytech, I used a used piece of safety wire!!

    No pics, but I just used side cutters to cut both ends of the little stem off, the I used two pairs of pliers, one holding the body and one holding the bottom of the little stem - a quick yank and I had a hollow body. Then I just took a piece of safety wire and doubled one end over, then put the other end through the body - the doubled up end was big enough to lodge in the body. I suppose if one were spunky they could twist the wire and make it all pretty and stuff. Or, if one were not lazy they could post a picture for all adventure riders to see...

    I have a couple of those things, one that I bought from late KLR guru Dave Jakeman, and another that a clubbie made a batch of as party favors. I keep them in my tool kits as karmic prophylaxis. I have yet to use either one, but I figure as long as I have them I won't need them.

    I have been known to loan them out on occasion.

    When you have a heavy knobby with a stiff sidewall (the absolute worst is the Trelleborg spiked tires for winter riding) it keeps squeezing closed as you work. The worst case is if you have a flat and remove one sidewall to patch or replace a tube and the other side of the tire still has the bead seated you are spreading the tire pretty far to get a hand inside.

    I have thought about building a tool just like this but was trying to figure a way to do it by modifying a used valve core. Never thought about taking apart a tool like Creeper did.:clap

    A bit of an update... for them that are interested in the ready made tool with ally handle.

    The tool is made by DRC Products (A Japanese company that makes a variety of interesting widgets) are available from, besides Pit Posse... Langston Racing, Wheeling Cycle Supply and CRFs Only.

    I appreciate that.. I run pretty stiff sidewalled knobbies MC4/6, S12's etc.. I know what you mean... but as far as I am concerned.. it's all in the techinque.. you seen that vid on transworld :deal
