Well not sure what I am going to do about all my threads with embedded photos hosted from Photobucket as they now want to charge and all my images have been locked out, just showing a warning message regarding paying for third party posting. apparently they want $400 per year.

Not sure what kind of arrangement you are in with them but I have used them for years.

Here, I just logged in, uploaded something (for free) and copied the code and posted it. I have a library full of stuff. I have two accounts, both FREE.

Same thing just happened this morning for me ....

I have used them for over 10 years ....

Their "terms of use" .. just changed

Free account : Each individual Member gets one free account that provides 2 GB of free storage or space available for your original photo files, or videos under 10min. The free account does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting. If a free account Member exceeds their Content Limit, their account will be immediately suspended and they will need to become a “Paying Member” (defined below) in order to continue accessing their account. You can upgrade to a Plus account at any time.

I have used them for 10 years with no issues other than recently the ads started to really hit the speed. This blocking of my photos has just happened and appears to be linked to a change in terms and conditions dated 28th June. Maybe only triggers at certain GB storage but terms seem to indicate the free account no longer allows third party posting.

I got the upgrade demand too. It's curious that for some users it still works and others not. I just deleted my account. I received no prior communications from them on the subject and I don't respond to coercive tactics.

Thinking seriously about hosting from a NAS at home. This seems to be a pattern in the photo biz, webshots did the same years ago. Starts out free and then they want $ when they think they've built a base of users with too much to lose by moving.

Received my message overnight. I've had a very underutilized Smugmug account for a few years so I guess I will be moving some files.

Same happened to me - got an email stating that there are some 3rd part hosting restrictions - now none of the forum photos that I have posted in the past ten years will show.................not worth $399 to fix that.............Time to move on..........

Pissed off........had always liked posting photos of things that I had made / repaired.....I am sure that it helped others but now none of that will be seen again.

    I'm ticked off.

Photobucket for years has been the site where many people on this and other forums have put photos to post. Just like radio ads or TV, the terms of service were that you put up with their ads and they let you post your photos. Without forewarning, Photobucket changed their terms of service unilaterally so that posting images on this or other forums (3rd party use) NOW REQUIRES A $399/YEAR PLAN. I have 2,415 photos there, many of which have been used to create "how to" posts in this and other forums, simply share trips, jokes, etc. Moving to another host will be extremely difficult and time consuming. Further, doing some Google research, it appears that they are not charging till people have a larger number of photos.

"Try this little taste of crack cocaine, Sonny."

Even so, after this latest Photobucket problem, I'm fed up and looking for ideas on where else to go. I don't mind paying a fee, but $400/year is a shake-down and I refuse to pay that much. Plus, what are they going to unilaterally raise it to next time?

Other than Google Images, what other good options are out there for hosting photos?

Smugmug. It's cheap and it's excellent and until recently the $ went directly into Baldy's operation (which we're posting on right now).

It's a blatant attempt to extort money. They change their terms of service and kill all previous links from their site. PB won't be getting any money from me. :finger

less than 800 photos in my bucket

probably a traffic issue that people see the photos WITHOUT seeing their ads.

my ride reports will be toasted for a while until I can find a solution.

had it been a reasonable amount considering the cost of web space these days
    I would have paid it.

    what they are asking?

Changing hosting sites now is not going to fix what PB has screwed up due to their greed.

I'm in the same position, have posted lots of "how-to" pics in the KLR Only thread, several ride reports, etc. All pics gone now. Sleazy business practise. Just got another e-mail from Photobucket just now:

You're getting dangerously close to hitting your storage limit!

We know you've got a lot of photos. Keep them safe on Photobucket.com

I'm certain it was their intent all along to monetize their 'service'. Off-site linking to images eats up their bandwidth and they get no ad revenue from it, thus the change. I expect that they are doing this to accounts that have a certain amount of off-site link usage, maybe those that aren't having problems don't use off-site linking that often, OR the threads aren't the popular (less hits in their end).

This isn't a 'sleezy' business practice, offsite linking costs them and returns $0. It's economically unsupportable.

This is exactly why I've never used any third party hosting. You can get your own hosting for under $9 a month (probably cheaper even) and domain name registration is inexpensive.

It was never free. The terms of service said that you read our ads and we will host your photos. They were not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, same as network TV. And like network TV, a very large population became dependent on their part of society.

To take the analogy a step farther, imagine that you live outside of the mid-west, where there are tornado sirens. A tornado or hurricane comes along and the phone towers are down due to no power. Maybe it's some other type of major event going on. Then the TV/radio stations unilaterally decide that interrupting their programming costs them in ad revenue, so they don't issue warnings.
