I think I passed you guys mid-afternoon on Rattlesnake Road if you were headed south there at that time. I was on my GSA, and I as we passed I was thinking "those look like some nice vintage bikes". :clap

Thanks for the tip on Hawbottom Road, sounds like a good place to go scout out.

That was us. We were heading south on Rattlesnake around 3:00-ish. Its about an hour home for us from the bottom of Rattlesnake run (taking the dirt / back roads), so we wanted to be sure to be back by dark. Our 6 volt lights work about as good as a flashlight from the dollar store with old batteries in it...

Its funny that you thought "those look like some nice vintage bikes" ... because we said "we need to get us some nice modern bikes like that GSA". HaHa. Thanks for the complement though, its fun to keep the old bikes going, and they are great for a cruise around the dirt roads.

BUMP!!!! Workin' On A Buildin'! My DR650SE project is rolling along nicely, the old 350/441 won't have to shoulder the load this year by herself. Looks like we may have some 40 degree temps comin' up, it's time to head back to the woods!

I should join up with you guys on my old XL500s. Then we can hold a geezer bike parade. :rofl

Between us, we'd have 18 volts, so we should be good for night rides. :lol3

Somehow I missed several posts in this thread. :ddog
    Gotta pay better attention.

Looks like a great deal of fun Paebr!!! Love that Tdub. I saw a photo of an F650GS like mine with TDub wheels and tires. Not sure if it was wise, but it looked cool as shit. :D

Great photos SCJ! I have a real soft spot for Xl350s..... My first real motorcycle was a 1974, silver tank with a blue stripe on top.
I never had one but always had wood for those XTs too. :lol3

Hawbottom is rougher than any "legal" road in Michaux. It's short but a friggin blast.

    Thanks for posting up.

    That's all 4 of em. :lol3:lol3

    Good to hear Jeff!

I enjoy farkling, so have fun getting your sixfiddy ready for the long haul. :thumb

:lol3 Now that's funny! That'd make a great signature line. (I've owned several 6 volt bikes and know exactly what you mean.)

I was trying to remember what I was doing on the 20th instead of riding my XT500. Oh yeah, I was up at the PVR Swapmeet in York buying this:

It's a '97 CCM 350. Another "oddball" that uses the old air-cooled Rotax engine. Very much like an English cousin to my ATK.

I'd really like to get a bunch of us guys with old XTs, XLs and such together for a ride sometime. Would be great fun to ride in a group of old thumpers!

@Jax - I think Biesecker Gap in southern Michaux is far rougher than Hawbottom - at least it is on my XT500. Hawbottom is fun, I avoid Biesecker if at all possible.

Mark your calendars now for June 9th - the date of the "South Mountain 130" dual-sport ride. Starts in Waynesboro with breakfast at the Mountain Gate Restaurant and ends in Mountaindale (on the edge of the Frederick Co. watershed). Free to participate. Had a great time last year.

Another nice fine Charlie, I look forward to seeing your ATK in Michaux soon! My '96 is still in it's "Terrible Teens", 17 is nothin' compaired to the vintage iron you guys are ridin'! Wish I still had my 40 year old '73 DT360 Enduro now.

No apology necessary Charlie. Your blogs/projects are cool.
Oh... and Besecker is indeed the rougher road... Slipped my brain.

    COME ON SPRING!!!!!!

The groundhog said it, I believe it... nuf said. :deal

Yeah, we should have a vintage enduro ride!! Me, you, BradyD, and my Dad would make at least 4...

What part of Biesecker is really rough?? I want to check it out! What the official Michaux map calls Biesecker Gap and what Google Maps calls Biesecker Gap are different.... could you link me to a Google map showing the rough part of the road? I have yet to find it, thanks!

    Let's see if this works:
    http://goo.gl/maps/3qp9S
Google calls it "Forest Road", runs between Gap Rd. and Wirt Rd. Only 1.4 miles long. If you turn onto it from Gap Rd., it's pavement for a short way, then it turns into "baby heads" and near Wirt Rd. smooths out to "normal" for Michaux. Last I was on it (June '12) there were low hanging branches to add to the fun. I could never find a good line through the roughest part, neither could my buddy Leo. Other folks say it's "so easy a big GS could do it". <SHRUG>

Yep, to each his own on description of roughness and all.

I find if I buzz along on my old XL500, I float through that road. Go slower, and I'll pound off every baby head rock (like that description). Nothing so bad that I couldn't get my Harley through it either, but I wouldn't want to.

First time I ever went up and down Biesecker Gap Road was last spring on the DRZ. Had lots and lots of loose rocks and I wasn't sure if I really wanted to do it on the GSA (it already has drop, I mean 'character', marks from similar roads :D ). I was back in the area in early December on the GSA, and decided to give it a go. Still very rocky but not at all the loose ones like I had remembered earlier in the year, and we made it through with no drama.

Thanks for the info guys! I know exactly where that is, last time I was in Mixhaux we rode past it on Wirt Road... I thought about going down it but it was dusk and I wanted to get home before dark so we didnt have to depend on our old 6v lights. I'll have to check it out next time...

I started this thread as a 1 ride, short ride report...I very soon realized that this collective of personalities, posting photos and stories, had a great ability to let me ride vicariously through them when I was unable to be there.

I've met some extraordinarily great people too. :freaky

Thank you all for 100,000 views. It's a testament to the excellent riding to be had in Michaux and other PA and MD State Forests.

I'm looking forward to many more adventures in Michaux!! :deal Hellz yeh:D
