Luapahoehoe Point, ya? Great spot, I always stop there when on the east side.
Yep ! Check out the Hakalau Gulch park next time you're in the area. They've fixed it up real nice. Took a ride up Mauna Kea today. Beautiful clear skies with the usual afternoon clouds.
I was on vacation in Maui the end of June. We had gone up to the summit of Haleakala in a car to watch the sunset and supermoon rise. I was really looking forward to making the trip up again when I rented a bike for the day. My brother-in-law rented an Electra Glide and I got a V-Strom. I also rented a GoPro to try to record some of the fun. Unfortunately that was the only day in the 14 I was there that it really rained. We rode out the road toward Hana a while. It was dry there, so we decided to try to get up Haleakala and get above the clouds where it looked clear. We headed up in a light shower and by the time we got up into the switchbacks it was pouring, though the road was still pretty fun. When we got up around 4,000 feet visibility was so bad we gave up and turned back.
I ended up going out to Kahakuloa Village the morning before I returned the bike in Kaanapali, that was a lot of fun. I put 250 miles on the bike in 24 hours, though.
The humidity fogged the GoPro lens some, but I got some good photos and video, I'll see if I find anything good to post.
Great ride yesterday out at South Point
Really an awesome day! Back home after a great day in the dirt.
And tomorrow looks like this:
Lucky you live Big Island!!!!
Riding Incredible Hana The Other Day
Here's a spot we get to ride every couple of months on Invitation:
You'll forgive me for putting Coppertone on my forehead while I view all these. Smells even more realistic
hiADV saw you on YT (and sub'd) and thought, oh yea! Next time it's Waipio and Papakolea on 2 wheels!
jealous of her time on the big island! her day irdin' with hiadv was the best day of her trip she says. i got to stay home and work.
her first time on a 'real dirt bike'. now i might have to go out and get her one!
That was a fun day and she did great! She handled water crossings, steep inclines, rocks and sand with ease. Hopefully next time you can come along too!

I met up with Kona local and inmate gfh and we took a leisurely stroll south around the island and then back to Kona via the new Saddle rd.
Big Bamboo, I think I saw you on Saddle? I was on the black KLR giving out headlight flash warnings... johnny law was out in full force for the new road opening!
Yep, I saw you! Did you get a chance to ride UP the new Saddle Road on a clear day? The views are amazing! I forgot my camera last time. More photos soon...
Haven't yet, just from the Hilo side. I'll have to check it out from Kona side soon.
Well, now that the old Saddle Road has been bypassed, the traffic on it has dropped to practically ZERO! Just a few lost tourists and the occasional ranch truck. On the down side, the traffic on the new road has dramatically increased, and with that, way more police presence. Rider Beware! Anyway, pictures: ==================================================================================================== ==================================================================================================== ==================================================================================================== That's a HPD vehicle in the distance, my friend who just passed me is about to get a ticket !
Rode the Waiakea OHV Park today, really boring, seriously boring! Completely boring! I wonder where the $50K+ of Federal Dollars per year the state supposedly spends on that place goes..... If it weren't for the fallen trees in the parking areas there'd be Nothing to do!
Looks like somebody got Lucky there though.....
Some dental floss laying in the parking area
