    Thanks for the kind words. You can call me rig-curious... and the curiosity had me give in. :D Wife is still not convinced... :cry

    It is a rather basic rig, one that was most affordable for a newb like me. I will certainly keep peeking into the hack forum to expand my knowledge and seek advice. I appreciate the warm welcome!

    My biggest surprise while test riding it prior to purchasing (in pouring rain) is how tough it was to actually drive this beast. I don't think of myself as a whimp, but the muscle groups that are used to steer this hunk of steel must have been neglected by me in the recent past, as I got tired rather quickly. :knary

    Can't wait to put new tires on it (seller gave me a set of 3) and take this out on an easy, exploratory ride. Still need to learn to comfortably and confidently 'fly' the chair. And address a few minor oil leaks - me thinks that switching back to dino oil will fix most of them. I am not a fan of using synthetic oils in old(er) engines. Thoughts?

    BTW, I am on both soviet steeds and russian iron, but thanks for the suggestion.

    As far as the avatar goes, found it on this site in one of the photo threads. I really liked it and decided to keep it. Reminds me of my wife's trunk...

    Good looking ural. Check the alignment on it if you are experiencing a lot of struggle while driving. I rebuilt mine in May, fought it for a short time, laid out some straight edges in the garage, and with those and a magnetic level, my next 10000km have been a blast, and not nearly as tiring.
    As far as the oil, I still have a few leaks here and there. I generally wipe the engine and gearbox down after driving which keeps the cement fairly clean, but I have given up on completely trying to contain all the oil.

    Finally got the rig over from the seller to my house (350 mile round trip). It is good to now know that it fits in the garage, along with my v-strom and a bunch of other crap...

    Very proud to own my own hack! Just need free time to learn to manhandle the outfit. :D

    What do you figure it's worth? A friend is selling his 1983 BMW R100RT with a Motorvation Spyder chair, but hasn't set a price yet

    I'm thinking something like yours or his would make a good first rig. I'd need to fly and ride across the continent for either, but I see that as a good thing. I notice yours has steering mods, which is a big plus, I think

    pfestus1's outfit was featured in Hack'd magazine when it was built. Gary Haynes, good friend of mine and many, did the mounts and subframe. I have riden this outfit and it is decent.
    That Spyder outfit looks great too though.

    Cost: Bike 10K, build #1 (didn't work) 6k, build #2 (didn't work) 6k, build #3 (worked!) 16k = Total 38k plus still developing!

    Had to work for myself with limited arm strength and no hand grip so had to be done right. And it is!

    Well I'm down the hole about $23000 AUD so far and it's still not finished. Leading link yet still to come, driving lights on the chair and other stuff to go on and inside the chair so rough projection of close to $28000 when finished.

    Amazing the cost range. I think I'm in a good position to keep it way on the cheap end of things. I've decided to use my parts 1981 CB750F as the base (after I try getting it titled.) It's completely disassembled but basically all there. I have a Bridgeport style mill, lathe, and MIG welder in my garage, so make custom parts is no issue.
    I think it would be best for me to buy a used sidecar instead of building on from scratch for my first setup. So over the winter I'll keep my eyes open and hopefully score something decent around $1000-$1500.
    First setup would be just bolting on the sidecar. Then I'd work on building a leading link setup/car tires/sidecar linked brake etc.

    There's a guy named Clint on Russian Iron or Soviet Steeds, trades as Cold War Trophies. He has a pretty good deal (IMHO) on offer for reconditioned Dnepr car kits. He's on EBay, too.

    Consists of a tub, fender, frame, shock, rim, spokes, and hub. Seat frames only. No tire, upholstery, or lights. Tub, fender and frame in IMRON primer. $1000, not incl. shipping. It's all palletized, so figure $300 just about anywhere if you shop around.

    Your friends R100RT rig looks great. Does it have a sub frame, or is the Spyder bolted directly to the bike frame? Just a guess, but If his has a sub frame, then I'd say its worth around $6500 to $7500. My rig has some extras, full convertable top plus a "bikini top", electric lean adjustment, anti-sway bar suspension. When I list it for sale I'll probalby start at $8500 and work from there. It would be nice to get what I have in my rig, but in the current economy I doubt that would be possible. It would be great if you could compare the two rigs side by side and choose between them.

    My first rig was a $450.00 Hitchhiker side car that I attached to a $250.00 Honda CB900. Probably add another $400.00 to get the Honda running and for a couple of universal clamps.....

    This spring I saw an add on Craig's list for a KLR650/Sputnik rig in Watertown, South Dakota for $3500.00 at a dealership called "The Motoshop". I contacted them to see if they would consider trading in my Honda rig. We were able to work out a deal and I came home with this:

    It has a DMC subframe and is just a blast to drive! I've put about 3000 miles on it over the summer and I average 41-42 mpg with it. It will cruise 60-65 mph with a 14 tooth front sprocket as long as I am not bucking a head wind.
    I kind of wanted something that would run at higher highway speeds. I'm not getting rid of the KLR rig, but I did buy this for $2500.00:

    The Guzzi is a 1976 Convert automatic and the side car is a Dnepr of unknown year. I'm not real happy with the Guzzi tug. It blows oil out of the breather, which I guess is common, but it's just not the right rig for the job. So I decided to trade my 2009 BMW XCountry that I had about $5000.00 invested in:

    So now I have separated the DNepr sidecar:

    And the fun begins. I have contacted Jay at DMC and it looks like $1600-$2000.00 to get the sidecar rigged to the GS. I have to replace the ball/ socket mounts on the sidecar:

    This is part of the estimated cost to mount it up to the GS. I still have to add the cost of rejuvinating and painting the sidecar. So final cost on this one could be $14000+

    If you get the GS/Dnepr rig on the road for around $14K you'll be doing great! Good Luck, I'm sure it'l make a great rig.

    2 years ago I bought the blue Goldwing / Friendship II rig for $1700 + $300 in gas to go fetch it. Fixed a few things, paid for the tax and tag and am in it $2600 (actually $2700, I just put a new rear tire on it). I ride it often, take it off road, take it camping, take out Mrs. G and the little dogs. etc.

    I bought the Bingham several weeks ago but have not decided what to tug it with.

    In the ensuing two years I have learned that I much prefer riding a hack rig over a two wheeled rig. It's time to put together a nice rig. Trying to decide whether to hack my Harley or sell the Harley and do a newer Goldwing or BMW K1200LT. My wife really likes the tilt front hacks so I'll probably do a Hannigan.

    Hard to really tell what I have into my rig.

    I started in '98 with a 97 Ural Tourist and I paid (I think) $4,500 for it. Rode it for three years.

    Bought a 'R100R for about $5,000 ( think) in 2001. Put the sidecar from the Ural on it; traded the Ural motorcycle for the subframe and mounting. After a year or so, I had Dauntless put a Unit lead link on the rig, which i think was about $1500 or. Had it ever since. So I think I have about $11,000 in it. There were some repairs to the bike, but they would have happened whether it had a hack or not.

    When you divide the cost by 13+ years and all the miles and my daughters growing up in the rig and now driving it themselves, it worth every penny and then some

    To make it I measured very, very carefully, attached it to the bike getting the lean out right, adjusted the toe in,locked it off, and (luckily?) it has been spot on! On a level throttle it tracks straight and true.
