Pirelli MT 90 rear and what front?

    Hello,

    I was hoping to grab some advice on what to use for a front tire. Riding about 70% slab and 30% gravel road what would you suggest? Thanks

    You will destroy a MT-21 rear on the slab in about 1500 - 2000 miles...
    Try Heidenau K-60 Scout or Mefo Super Explorer instead.

    MT-21 or D-606 work well on the front.

    There are a lot of opinions, but this is what works well for me.

    Check out the Anakee2. It is a road going DS tyre with deep wide grooves and narrow footprint.
    Extremely good on the slab wet or not and very good off road too.
    So far my favorite non knobby, road biased DS front.

    x2 on the K60. You may be replacing tires frequently with that much slab on an aggressive knobby like the MT's, great tire tho.

    I like the MT 90 Scorpion, it is a great rear tire imho.

    I have it for my street set, with the Heidenau on front. Nothing too bad with the Pirelli front, its fine if you keep on the pavement. Not nearly as good as the Heidenau in gravel or a little moderate dirt.

    I've run the TKC80 up front with good results, although it wore kind of funny after about 4000 miles. Still, got well over 5000 miles out of it.

    Your original question was was wich front tyre and everyone is telling you what rear.

    Whe are a riding group of 12 X 900 R's, whe all use MT90's on the back and TKC80 on the front, collectively whe have been through most. Whe are mostly dirt road and technical orientated, with a good mesaure of aspalt if whe really have to......

    i have a knobie rear with the anakee 2 upfront.
    I'm very impressed with the anakee, took vibrations out of the equations for me, grab REAL good on road and off road it was decent, i drove trough a lot of sand and gravel and it behave, altough remember, is not an 100% off road tire.
    The wet grip was also increased.
    For now, my perfect street combo would be mt90 rear and anakee 2 upfront.

    BTW: i bought the V spec tire, not the s. the difference was 10 bucks

    I'm running the Scorpion on the back and the TKC80 on the front, mainly slab use and no complaints at all.

    First off, I'm not a fan of 'mixing manufacturer's' between front and rear tires. Even 'mixing models' Those 'sets' are developed as a pair. If they could have used another model they make, they would probably save the R&D money and recommend it. But, they don't.

    A zillion people do it - for a 1000 reasons. If it's to save money - save money.

    I just put on my 4th rear Pirelli - MT90-AT and second front (stock fitment).

    I'm 50/50 pavement/gravel. I'm getting close to 6k miles for the rear. About 11k on the front. I change the front every other rear tire change.

    Tire price is right-IMHO- front $115, rear - $131 (IronPony.com). Good wear. I drop 10 psi if I have curvy gravel roads. Maybe more.

    I really don't feel like I need a knobby, especially for a gravel road. The downside of the knobby is tolerating them on pavement - wet pavement. . . and mileage and noise and vibration . . .

    Don't get me wrong - I like to keep a fresh knobby on my 450. The MT90 actually do hook up pretty well on gravel - wouldn't consider it at all for off-road.

    Just keep you psi where you need it - road or gravel.

    Thanks BOB RAMSAY for your feedback on the MT90, that's what was wondering if you could hammer the gravel roads with the MT90 and just drop the psi.

    Here's my 10 cents worth

    I run the Mefo Super Explorer on back and TKC 80 on front. Our dirt roads seem to have a bit more loose sand to them so the front knobby combo works well. while on pavement I keep FULL tire pressure in the front seems to keep it from cupping
    out after a few thousand miles. Now my second choice - recommendation if you don't want a full knobby, would be go with full set of either K60 Heidenau or Mefo Super Explorer's, both are a very nice Dual Sport Tire that will wear well on the pavement.
