How can this be done on a PC then loaded to a GPS. I've searched and found a related topc from back in 2007 that said it wasn't possible to mape just gravel roads. But that was 07. Can't really tell in Google maps what is gravel and not, it's not obvious, or at least I can't find it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You could use a good Benchmark map that has them pretty will dialed in - if they have one for your state.

+1 for Benchmark maps. You can also get a pretty good idea from Garmin City Navigator using Mapsource or Basecamp. These are what I use to plan trips. I then view my routes/tracks in Google Earth to see what the road surface actually is.

Sometimes a road will show as dirt in CN but may have been paved recently.

Darn, the benchmark maps are only western US. I'll check the other apps.
