Platting a dirt bike in CA

    Hi, looking at a TE 450 (that apparently from UptiteHusky was originally made to be road legal) it has parts for lighting although nothing setup. The bike looks great but i don't want to buy it if its going to cost me thousands to get plated'

    Any input would be appreciate i have to make up my mind in the next couple of days... thanks alllllll

    Headlight with working high and low beam, high beam indicator, front and rear turn signals, front and rear brakes, tail light (running light, brake light, license plate light), horn. Note: If the eighth digit in your VIN number has a 3 or a C you won't be able to make your bike street legal.

    is this true? is it that simple

    yes, it can be done!
    get urself a VIN verification http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg31.pdf from CHP or a lawman, the most importent part #7 is the :emision label part! hopefully they dont check it or mark the correct box :meets both ca and ohv (dual sport m/c)/or usa and epa standards
    then get a brake and light inspection http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg256.pdf-most mc shops can do this for ya!
    then go into the DMV with a positive can do attitude and ask to register this!
    if it dont fly, walk away and try again later or somewhere else!

    You also need something that will show speed and a odometer.

    It must have an emissions label saying it's CA (or Federal if over 7500 miles on the odo) emissions legal for off-road.
    If the bike is 2004 and newer, the label must say the above, but for on-road use.

    For the best show at getting it plated, have all the original exhaust,evap, and smog equipment on it.

    Sometimes you will get someone at the DMV who will not check or care, but not often.

    So true. Pick your location right the first time. Like in a suburb where it's busy as hell and people don't give a shit about their job. Like the one down the street from me. :lol3
    (I took a bike in and lady asked about emission sticker. Not trying to show my panic I started looking everywhere and not finding anything, I calmly pointed to a silver decal plastered between the engine and frame-can't even remember what it was-"Oh here it is", I said. The lady leaned over and said OK. that was it. I found the real sticker under the seat days later.)

    DMV in Cali check Odo but not speedo. They do not check exhaust, evap, or smog equipment. They don't check lights or any safety equipment. You can take a partial bike in and get it registered if it has frame and engine numbers, it doesn't even need lights, it doesn't even need to run. It needs an ODO.
    Plating dirt bikes has been spotty this last few years. Older bikes not in the system are easier. Newer bikes with 17 digit vins can bring up a red flag.

    If it's a 2006 or newer TE it's plated from the factory.

    when we went last year, there was NOBODY in the dmv :huh office exceprt the employees :lol3
