please don't use these oil filters

    Not seeing where that filter fits a BMW. :dunno If you want to compare filter lengths, compare 2 different brands that fit the same model.

    Didn't say it don't fit. You're still comparing a motorcycle oil filter to a filter that is not made for a motorcycle.

    Sorry, but BMW did not design a special filter for these bikes
    they used off the shelf automotive and industrial available
    common parts for air filters, oil filters and even light bulbs

    the wix 51348 is a perfectly acceptable filter for the oilhead bikes

    there appear to be two K&n filters for these bikes

    one is 55mm tall the other is 90mm tall

    I have the short ones, so yeah the kn-163 at 90mm tall might be comparable to a regular oil filter ( but the sorter ones that I have obviously are only capable of having approx half of the filter media of most other filters.. this was my point)

    the shorter one is kn-164

    here is one compared to a fram PH3614 ( again filter designation that was designed for oil head bikes or vice versace)

    Oil filters for modern gasoline engines perform only a few duties. The most important is trapping oil born particles that would harm engine friction surfaces. This job is the same regardless of where the engine is used and its size. The difference is the debris load based on the engine displacement and application. A generator application likely places fewer demands on oil filtration than an engine in a NYC taxicab. Good oil filters trap and hold particles of a particular size limit. Premium filters trap smaller particles.

    Oil filter performance is easily determined during a UOA by performing particle count and particle size distribution measurements.

    The days of prefilling filters Is long gone. Catapilliar will void the engine warranty if filters are pretty filled. There is more of a danger of getting contamination into the oil from the container when trying to fill it.
    While the gasket with fresh oil and follow the manufactures recommendation when tightening.
    I was in a hurry once and needed an oil change so I took my truck to a dealer for an oil change. There was a large window where you could watch the techs. I saw the tech install the filter then tighten it with a filter Wrench.
    5000 km later I went back to the same dealer for an oil change.....well they tried a bunch of things to remove the filter and then they drove a screw driver through it and procedures to leave the threaded base of the filter attached to the engine.....next was the hammer and chisel. Well 3 hours later they had it off...they wanted to charge me 100.00 per hour for changing the filter and the service Manager was saying how I caused the problem.....that was until I showed him the receipt from the last oil change that was done at their facility ..then the story changed.....that is why 99 per cent of the time I do my own.
    I can usually remove my filters by hand with a piece of sand paper wrapped around it for added grip.
    I am also a certified heavy duty mechanic that has spent a lot of years as a service Manager

    Do you own an oilhead? If so, have you ever changed your own oil? The oil filter faces up, so no tipping to the side required.

    You cannot implement 5-micron filtering with an in-line filter unless it's the size of a garbage can. You need to install a bypass filter that filters a small percentage of the flow and will eventually remove the smaller particles that pass through the main filter. It's easy to implement on a car where you have somewhere to mount the extra filter and it is easy to hide the hoses. The resulting savings from greatly extended oil change intervals are worthwhile in a commercial truck that holds ten gallons of oil and may run a million miles in its lifetime but makes less sense for a car. Definitely not worth the effort on a bike.

    That's a case study.
    My intention was to problematize why to buy this or that oil filter considering the expected kind and size of debris, the tolerances between moving parts and the convenient flow.
    The reading I made, trying to learn something, before buying the K&N filters added some notions of the differences.
    If that is so important to the longevity of the engine or not is a technical issue, well, an oil issue, that deserves the importance one wants do give to it.
    On my side, as an expert on nothing, became much richer after buying one bike or two and trying to understand and improve them.

    I took my '08 GSA into Max BMW in Troy for a service. It seemed to be taking an unusually long time. The mechanic came out twice and reassured me it would be done soon. Finally the bike was finished and he came out with a paper towel to explain the reason for the delay. Here is what was in the paper towel

    The cap wrench wouldn't turn it, so they stabbed it with a screwdriver. That didn't work, not to mention the filter is recessed up in the engine block. They ripped the filter housing to shreds and had to use a chisel to "walk" the baseplate off of the block. He asked me if I was the last one to change the oil. I said no, it was serviced by a BMW dealer (who's name I won't mention but is located in Rochester NY). The mechanic just rolled his eyes and said they probably didn't lube up the gasket before installing.

    I disagree regarding prefilling engine oil filters. Those who perform oil changes on large diesel engines (I have observed first hand Freightliner and Caterpillar techs) pre fill the oil filter during an oil change. The pre fill operation does require some care however. Make sure you fill the new filter from the outside holes (the dirty side) not the center threaded mounting hole. Some of these filters are large in volume and a first start without prefill would result in a sustained period of no oil pressure. My Cat engine filter holds about 2 quarts of oil. Without prefill, the HEUI injection system doesn't like a lack of oil pressure. Also, at first start, the split shot fuel delivery is likely poorly controlled until full oil pressure and flow is achieved.

    Also, but not necessarily related, diesel mechanics who change fuel filters always prefill the filter with fresh diesel fuel to preclude a difficult first start after a new fuel filter is fitted. Here again, make sure you prefill into the dirty side of the filter.

    Many automobile oil filter orientations preclude prefilling the oil filter. However, the first start after an automobile oil change usually has a very brief dry period before oil pressure is established.

    My oilhead boxer engine oil filter is carefully prefilled before installation. This helps to eliminate timing chain slap and initial oil starvation at first start.

    Also, it is poor practice to rev the engine at cold start especially with an old oil filter and before an oil change. You may open the bypass and dump a bunch of filter debris back into the engine by doing so.

    Agree on the above but I suspect the bypass opens far more often than most people realize. The bypass was stuck closed on a pattern filter I bought for my DR350 and a normal "cold start" in summer weather was enough to crush the filter element, even though I only blipped the throttle a tiny bit after about 30 seconds of idling. The filter element crushed down until it blocked off the exit from the filter cavity, at which point the oil pressure rose high enough to split the filter cover. The volume and pressure put out by the oil pump on that bike was quite surprising.

    That might work on older filters but the anti drainback valve will stop you from doing that on the newer style ones.

    I have had similar problems with OEM filters on a K 1600. I don't blame the product, merely the guy who installed it. Dang it, that guy was me. :rofl
