I easily imagine the results will predictably be the last option with he most votes, then standard 1190 and finally the R. Ask this question in a couple years and results may vary...then again we have plenty of very happy 950 owners still truckin'...

    Me too.

However, if I were going to buy an 1190, it would be the R. The better dirt capability is important to me.

I am in the process of buying the non-R 1190 Adventure.

I only ride on paved roads. My previous bike was a 1975 Honda CB750. I am not a KTM guy at all. The relatively light weight and the MSC feature are the two primary reasons I am buying this bike. Once I get familiar with this new KTM, I might be more inclined to try a dirt road every now and then, but I do not know how to ride in the dirt and at this late stage of my life I do not intend to try to learn.

I'm almost in the same spot in life as you :)
i also had a 1983 nighthawk 750 as my first bike then went to triumph, kaki etc.. now want a 80/20% adventure bike that i will mainly ride on roads across North america with the occasional gravel trail.my bones might break if i do serious off roading and I'm only 50 :)

My 2004 950 is in need of a engine rebuild so I decided it was time to move along. I'm expecting my R to be in any day now.

    Get both of 'em......

It's a pretty good conundrum to decide if you want the more advanced electronics of the standard or the dirtier configuration of the R. How will you ride your bike? Many of the 990's I see have not been offroad and having that bike as a roady is not using it's capabilities. I've seen GS's and S10's take on places like the White Rim Trail and Baja, they had their problems where the 990 did not. I really wonder if the standard would have the wheel and suspension issues if put in those conditions. And it's adjustability would be a big advantage. The R is so big that I think it's disqualified from a lot of the 990 territory but OTOH I'm sure there are skilled riders who will take them there.

    I just enjoy good conundrums.........:lol3

    Where is the undecided option?

I selected standard but prefer the look of the R.

I'm would likely only do 'medium' off-roading so the standard is likely a better option for me.

Good point to have an undecided.
I too was thinking R but the standard for my purposes 80/20 on off road
would be better for me .. Most of the road or gravel for me .
besides if i want to go hard core off-roading , I am sure there will be a suspension wheel upgrade (probably expensive)

My 950 is looking more like Meoni's every month. I'm keeping it. :evil

Let the new bikes fight with the GS's for supremacy. I could care less.:rofl

Of course I haven't ridden the new 1190-R yet, so this is all probably bullshit, right? :huh

I'm thinking, use the xcf 250 as a goof around trail bike. Use the 300xcw as a lite weight birtbike, and put my 525 D/S into dirt bike mode.
And then Put the Adv 990R that I use for street into D/S mode.
And buy the 1190R for street. I'll just have to keep it hidden from the wife. For a couple of years or so.
This way I can keep them all.

Standard Adventure...primarily road use with the option to peel off the highway and onto a dirt trail to my favorite fishing hole. Also prefer the lower seat height of the standard as it offers me much more comfort having both feet flat on the ground at a stop.
