    Hello ADV friends,

I just wanted to introduce this new thread for all our POST PRODUCTION / POST RIDE news about The Middle Kingdom Ride. (www.mkride.com)

For those who are not familiar with our journey, the MKRIDE was (past tense) a 65 day - 17,674km - motorcycle odyssey around China by Canadian brothers Ryan & Colin Pyle. Our journey was a counter-clockwise circumnavigation of China. We safely completed our journey on October 17th 2010, and have now begun editing our documentary film and working on our written book; both of which will be published and available in 2011.

Watch this space, and our website (www.mkride.com) for updates and information.

Colin and I wanted to extend a warm thank you to all the ADV friends that were involved in helping the MKRIDE team in getting around China. Colin and I both hope we can return the favor sometime in the near future.

    Ride Safe.

    Dear MKRIDE Followers,

First of all, we want to thank everyone for their continued support. We finished our trip exactly one month ago and we continue to receive awesome emails from folks who followed our journey around China. With that being said, it's been a tough four weeks trying to re-assimilate ourselves back in to the fold of "regular life". I've slowly gotten back in to my photography work, and Colin is currently enjoying a holiday in the USA. Waking up every morning and knowing that you don't have to ride 8 or 10 hours is a feeling I am starting to miss.

The great thing about long riding trips is the simplicity of the moment. Each day you just have to wake up and ride - your only non-spontaneous decision is the destination at the end of the day, everything else is decided along route. The hectic distractions of work and city life, and to an extent family life, are left behind and that moment of feeling like a real explorer takes hold. I really miss riding a motorcycle through a remote countryside and experiencing something new for good or bad every single day. I miss that complete experience: the wind pulling on my jacket, the smell of coal fires burning and various foods being cooked in a nearby village, the bumps in the road and even the sand and gravel that sent me crashing out on several occasions. And, I really miss that feeling of being completely open to your surrounding environment, with nowhere to hide. It's remarkable to be on the road for 65 days riding a motorcycle through China and it was an experience that Colin and I both consider to be life changing.

Colin and I are currently scrapping together journal entries and piecing together chapters in an effort to get a book published from our journey. I have also begun editing our documentary film, with the very talented Jonathan Hogan, who is our editor for the project. Our goal is to have the book and film available before summer 2011. We'll be sure to keep everyone up to date with regards to new developments on those fronts.

Lastly, we've had a lot of media coverage in the last 4 weeks, and there is more to come, but we'd like to direct you to some of the stories that were posted in the last few weeks. Please see a partial list below.

RE: Guinness World Record Awarded to MKRIDE

Canadian Brothers Set a World Record for their 18,000km Journey Around China on BMW Motorcycles:

Canadian brothers Colin and Ryan Pyle are honored to receive an award by the Guinness World Records(TM) for their 18,000km odyssey around China on BMW F800GS motorcycles. Their journey will become a documentary film and book entitled The Middle Kingdom Ride.

On March 9th, 2011 Canadian brothers Colin and Ryan Pyle received a confirmation by the Guinness World Records(TM) that they had indeed set a World Record for their motorcycle journey around China. According to the Guinness World Records(TM) the name of the record they received was for the “Longest Journey by Motorcycle in a Single Country”.

Canadian brothers Colin and Ryan Pyle completed their epic motorcycle journey by returning back to Shanghai on Sunday October 17th, 2010, after 65 days on the road circumnavigating China on their BMW F800GS motorcycles. Their journey was a unique one, as they have become the first riders to fully circumnavigate China by motorcycle in one single journey.

During their remarkable 17,674km odyssey the brothers have encountered some of the most intense changes in culture, weather, altitude and terrain that exist in the world. They tackled heavy rains, flooding, landslides, freak hailstorms, extreme altitude (above 5000m/16,000ft), sand, gravel, thousands of kilometers of road construction and even bureaucratic / military interference.

Colin and Ryan intend to produce both a documentary film and a written book on their experiences in China, which have been far from regular. Anytime someone puts him or herself out there, into the wild, and opens themselves up to the experiences of such a vast and unique country one can’t help but encounter moments of danger, humor, sadness, gratification and personal gain and setback. Their journey will prove to be both colorful and dramatic, both intense and fulfilling.

Colin and Ryan Pyle are brothers from Toronto, Canada. But that’s about all they have in common. Ryan has spent the last decade in China building his career as a Documentary Photographer. Colin stayed closer to home, in Toronto, and built up, and sold, his own successful currency trading company. Together they plan to showcase much of China’s change and development from factory to farm. The general purpose of the trip is to put China on display. To explore the visual and cultural wonders that is China. With a massive population, crowded cities, abundant minorities and its stunning natural landscape; China offers a traveler an experience like no other. Colin and Ryan have titled their project, “The Middle Kingdom Ride”, as China’s historical name was once The Middle Kingdom.

Ryan and Colin will be raising money for the SEVA Foundation during their journey. SEVA, is a San Francisco based charity that has, for more than 30 years, been serving people around the world who are struggling for health, cultural survival and sustainable communities.

    Hello MKRIDE friends,

I just wanted to let everyone out there know that I will be speaking for the first time, publicly, about The MKRIDE. The event is scheduled for Friday April 15th 2011, at the Innis Town Hall, #2 Sussex Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event is being hosted by the University of Toronto, the Asian Institute and the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival. My talk will begin at 630pm and continue until 830pm. A one hour reception will be held afterwards. Please see below for exact details.

To refresh everyone's memory, the MKRIDE was a 65 day - 18,000km - motorcycle journey around China completed by my brother Colin and I in late 2010. Our journey is in the process of being converted in to a television series and a book.

I am looking forward to the chance to speak about our experiences throughout our trip as the weather, bureaucratic interference and sheer magnitude of the journey took it's toll.

Sadly, Colin won't be able to attend the event has he is currently studying in Europe. I will focus the talk around our preparation for the journey and some of the most testing aspects of executing an expedition like this in China.

There is an event flier attached to this email, and the link for the event is below. We hope you, and a few of your friends, can make it.

Please check out our NEW Facebook PAGE for further events and details about our project.

Please RSVP using this Event Link: http://webapp.mcis.utoronto.ca/EventDetails.aspx?eventid=10002

DESCRIPTION - THE MIDDLE KINGDOM RIDE WITH RYAN PYLE
    Friday April 15th 2011

6:30-8:30 Opening remarks by Senator Vivienne Poy (Chancellor Emerita, University of Toronto); Lecture by Ryan Pyle (Award winning photographer) and Q&A

    8:30-9:30 Informal reception

Ryan Pyle is an award winning documentary photographer who has spent the last ten years of his life visually documenting life in China for the world's leading magazines and newspapers. While living in Shanghai, and documenting China has proved an amazing experience for Ryan, there was always a need for a bigger adventure. So when Ryan's brother, Colin, recently quit his "Bay Street" job, and sold his house, the two brothers decided that something truly epic needed to be attempted. Together these brothers from Toronto decided that they were going to circumnavigate China on their BMW F800GS motorcycles. And that's exactly what they set out to do.

On October 17th 2010, Colin and Ryan safely returned to Shanghai, on what was the first complete circumnavigation of China by motorcycle ever completed. The journey took the brothers 18,000km in just 65 days and exposed them to: dangerous flooding along the border of China and North Korea, military interference along the border of China and Mongolia, and sub-freezing temperatures and a hail storm at 5200m above sea level on the border of China and Pakistan. Not to mention the altitude sickness and mechanical failure that added to their adventure on the high plateau in rural Tibet. This was a journey and an adventure without precedent. During their entire odyssey around China, Colin and Ryan filmed daily using motorcycle mounted cameras, helmet mounted cameras and an HD Camera operated by a camera man who followed them; so that they could capture their once-in-a-lifetime experience on film. Colin and Ryan have named their project: "The Middle Kingdom Ride" and are currently in the process of publishing a book about their adventures as well as a documentary film. For more information you can visit:www.mkride.com.

We, at the Asian Institute, are pleased to announce that on April 15th Ryan Pyle, a University of Toronto graduate and AI Affiliate Member, will join us to discuss his photography career, his motorcycle expedition, and the challenges of film making in "The Middle Kingdom". Samples of his photography and video clips from his motorcycle film will be included in his lecture. Ryan rarely makes it back to Toronto and we are excited about this opportunity to share his work and experiences with a wider audience.

Congratulations on your record as recognized the the "guiness book of world records." I followed your trip reports last fall and it seemed like a tough ride.

Sadly, I think that mkride didn't get much traction here on adv because of the way that trip report was written. Nearly 18 thousand kilometers across China, a country I know and love dearly, and not one single picture in your trip report? That to me is more astonishing than your ride. Adv is an amazing website that many people across the globe have contributed so much to (mostly visually). It might have helped your book and dvd sales (in my humble opinion, please don't take this the wrong way) if you had included a a bit of photos as a 'teaser' to make people interested to buy your final and grand compilation of a book and dvd. I saw your website and dug around but I found some of your amazing photography work. Sadly not even a crumb of that talent was given out for free on this website but held back for the book/dvd sales.

two small things to say, if I may:
without precedent: Just because someone hasn't posted it on the internet doesn't mean it hasn't been done before.

cameraman who followed...:On your website, it seems your sag wagon/chase vehicle is a brand new Porsche Cayenne? Nice work! Not many people in China have $200-250,000 for a chase vehicle! :clap

    Hello,

I'm writing because I thought many of you might be interested in knowing the that Guinness World Book of Records for 2012 is currently available in book stores globally.

Colin Pyle and Ryan Pyle would like to direct your attention to Page 121 of the 2012 edition, so that you can view our record for the Longest Continuous Motorcycle Journey within a Single Country.

Colin and Ryan are very proud that their journey has been recognized as a Guinness World Record, but that's not the reason why we wanted to ride motorcycles around China. We planned and executed our journey not only to enjoy riding motorcycles together in the most remote corners of the China, but also because we wanted to have a deeper understanding of the diverse landscapes, cultures and minorities that exist in China.

By focusing only on one country, and not traveling through dozens, we were able to really dial in and understand what is going on in China, and how it's rapid transformation is affecting the lives of people throughout their country. We hope our journey, and the reasons behind our journey, will raise interest among not only adventure motorcycle riders but also travellers and anyone who might be interested in learning more about what China has to offer.

We have a book and television show that are coming out in 2012. Both are currently being produced at the moment. For updates on our broadcast and publications you can stay in touch via our FACEBOOK page for regular updates. We thank you very much for your time and we look forward to staying in touch.

Monday, December 3, 2012. HONG KONG — G219 Productions Limited announces that the new adventure travel book by adventures and television presenters Colin Pyle and Ryan Pyle is entitled The MIDDLE KINGDOM RIDE. The book will be published worldwide in the English language on Thursday, December 6th 2012.

    THE MIDDLE KINGDOM RIDE
When Canadian brothers Colin and Ryan Pyle set out from Shanghai on a motorcycle journey that had never previously been attempted, they thought they had some idea of what lay ahead of them. It was a misconception that had become evident by the end of Day 1. But, despite the many challenges they faced, 65 days and 18,000 km later they’d succeeded in circumnavigating China.

In an expedition of extremes, Colin and Ryan visited the third lowest point on Earth and slept at Everest Base Camp beside its highest mountain. They traveled off-road through deep desert sands in suffocating heat, traversed mountain passes in freezing temperatures that turned the moisture in their clothes to ice, and rode in torrential rain through mudslides beside rapidly rising flood waters.

At the end of their remarkable journey, the brothers had strengthened the bond between them, gained a Guinness World Record, tested their endurance to its limits, and shared an adventure that most of us will only ever dream of having.
In their book The Middle Kingdom Ride, Colin and Ryan take us with them as they travel through the diverse and extraordinary landscapes of China, from its border with North Korea, to the ancient Muslim city of Kashgar, across the vast empty spaces of the Mongolian grasslands, over the mountains and into the monasteries of Tibet.

Hey guys - I just listened to your podcast interview from 2012 with Tom Lowdermilk on "Side Stand Up". I was so interested I flicked over to Amazon and bought your DVD. I then found an episode on YouTube and enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks for bringing this amazing landscape to us.

I thought you would like to know! I hope your DVD and book sales fund several more adventures.

PS - it is truly a drag that "Side Stand Up" is no more. We need more podcasts like that. I'm still working backwards through their inventory from iTunes.
