Every time I see an image like this I think of what it had to be like crossing the country on a horse. Those people were super ADV'ers.
That is what I was thinking when I crossed US50. A stretch of road of 20 or 30 miles was taking me about 15 or 20 minutes and that same stretch would take a day or 2 in a wagon. They were tough and patient.
I think it took something like 6-18 months to cross the country!

Just imagine how daunting some of the obstacles like canyons, mountains, and deserts must have looked like to them. Today, we cross the country with little more effort than it would have taken them to just go in to town for supplies.
