Just want to add my thanks for the effort you took to document the trip! I particularly liked the maps you would include. I feel like a major piece of the puzzle is missing if I don't have a mental location in my mind of what is being described or where the pictures are being taken. Your reporting was perfect! Zoom out on the map.. get an idea where your track was.. start reading the update. Just perfect!

Glad you are home safe and sound and good luck with the new job, house, life!

Great RR - Thank you for ALL of it.

    Hey guys,

Don't worry I still have more gear reviews coming but it I a little hectic right now.

Yesterday I walked on the ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver so I could pick up the bike from Air Canada Cargo. After about 15 cm of snow in the lower mainland and the island it warmed up enough for me to risk riding.

The shipment had to clear customs first and I when I went to get my stamp I was informed that it would be another day. I explained my situation and the nice agent managed to get the inspection done immediately. So by 5:15 I was riding to catch a 5:45 ferry back to the island.

It was damn cold I tell you but on the mainland the roads were fine.

By the time I reached Nanaimo it was dark and the temps hovering around zero. There was thick fog on the highway so I had my wife following me with the flashers on to protect my back side. I had 30 km to ride to the place I am storing the bike. When I got there the roads had started freezing.

Yesterday ranks up there as one of those "what the heck am I dong here?" days

Fantastic ride report so far, just making my way through this great trip.

I'm leaving from Edmonton this fall for the exact same trip, 6 months down to South America, and flying myself and my bike back. Funny enough I'm also moving to the coast when I return to Canada! I'll be leaving in early September after I get out of the Army.

I've got a few specific questions for you but I'll finish the ride report before I make you answer anything a second time! I've got lots of planning to do over the next 6 months, as well learning some Spanish.

What an incredible trip! Thanks for keeping such a great record of your travels. I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to spend that much time away, but maybe doing this in a 2 or 3 segments may work. If you're doing any presentations around Edmonton on your trip, I'd try to make it.

    Thanks!

I've been through a few ride reports on Adv and have to say your's captivated me the most. The detail, the pics, the people, and all the stories made it very difficult to stop until the end. Glad you're back safe. It's -22C with the wind today in Edmonton. I bet you're enjoying the 0 C there. I passed on the link to your ride report to some guys I ride with (one being my pastor at Beulah) and Sunday night he said he read your report over a 2 hour period of time and enjoyed it immensely. Again, thanks, Dave. Maybe we'll meet sometime.

We have been very actively looking at houses and have finally found one! Looks like we will be moving in April 15th.
Can't wait to start exploring all that Vancouver island has to offer!

Really nice area with great riding and some decent salmon fishing not to far away. I'm betting you're going to really like it.

Even the ferrys aren't too bad when you're on a bike.

    Hey Dave,

Well I'm getting close to the end of my journey down here and was wondering if using Dakar motors is necessary. Is it possible to just go direct to the shipping companies? Worth the 1,000 pesos or would you skip it next time.

    Thanks!

How's your Spanish? If I was fluent I probably could have done it myself but Sandra has it so organized it's hard to beat the ease and simplicity.

She has all the contacts and a step by step printed instruction sheet. It is quite a process and having all the people expecting your arrival was really nice.

thanks, Dave. you're probably right about that fee being worth the ease of what she has set up.

Awesome Dave, very rare to come across a RR that is as fun to read and still as informative as yours. It can't be easy being that diligent with your records and it is much appreciated by the whole ADV community!! Like most, I have plans to head south and your pictures and experiences keep that fire burning strong. Again, a huge thanks and best wishes :freaky
