My condolences Sylvia, our thoughts and prayers are with you brother.

Going to miss your regular posts in the f5irehose as well, but am glad you will at least be popping in.

That particular photo is actually in Chile. There are no fence lines in southern Bolivia, and that bit of desert looks Atacama-ish.

The Bolivian section will be a mix of very rough tracks and riverbed interspersed with some off pit riding across wide open spaces. It is very similar to the Morocco stages if the Dakar except at a much higher altitude.

Nasser's offer of assistance to the Escalé brothers at the 11th hour - as he has - is both a tremendous act of generosity and a not the least clever PR move; for a guy who has had his fair dose of less than stellar publicity in association with Dakar efforts the last couple years.

Hope that some of the good karma from this deed follows him through january.

    Via Dirtrider.com:

"You can’t mention Baja without acknowledging Honda’s presence there and speaking of Honda, remember the photos of the factory CRF450 Rally that Team HRC raced to wins in the OiLibya Rally and Merzouga Rally not long ago? It’s the same one that the five team riders will be employing in the upcoming Dakar Rally, of course.
Well, HRC has begun production of a limited run of these machines. The first ones will go to Dakar participants Jean de Azevedo, Pablo Rodriguez and Laia Sanz. But after that, they’ll be available to other interested individuals! American Honda hasn’t announced yet if it will market them, nor has a price been listed, but you can bet it’d pay for a couple of standard CRF450Xs. —Mark Kariya"

Perhaps explains some of the bike/support differences we've discussed... :D

quoting feature is failing again for me for some of you.

Just wanted to say that Nasser extending his generosity to help the brothers is a great move and should be applauded.
I refuse to thin it is a publicity stunt, until he spends twice as much on telling people that he helped them.

Anyways super happy for the bros they seem to deserve this kind of help.

It seems like route info is sneaking out, but can't find the original source, it doesn't seem to be on Dakar.com unless its within the competitors log in area? :clap:clap:clap

180 km SS on Leg 1 (630 km liason) to shake things down and establish a pecking order.
The Special is located in the Cordoba region; famous for it's WRC style roads and track's that we've seen in some previous editions... woohoo! :clap

I would hazard a guess that this is not Nasser's billfold being open but that of the Qatar Ministry of Tourism or whatever royal in the Ministry that fronts the sporting aspects I recall reading somewhere that Nasser was connected to the royal family in some way (IIRC it was brought up during his go at the Summer Olympics in the shotgun sports). This doesn't diminish the act of kindness in any way what-so-ever.

I bring this up as other have alluded to whether or not RG would have done the same for a U.S. rider and I do not see how these two situations could even be compared to each other.

For sure it is most likely the Qatar Tourism Ministry footing the bill (Nasser's main sponsor) and not Al Attiyah personally who is opening his wallet. (Even if the ASO release is worded to give the impression that Nasser is the man who "made it happen"... but in that respect - Lucas cruz is probably every bit as deserving of praise :clap).

I stand by the statement that it is a good PR move, as well as a tremendous act of generosity... as the ASO press release states, both of the brothers will now ride with Qatar prominently on their riding gear - a great "good samaritan" public interest story.

One final thing... the "Prince" title that Nasser has been afforded in some circles seems to be a common misstake. I think it may be a case of misstaken identity, perhaps some folk confusing him with another high profile Middle East Rally driver - Mohammed Bin Sulyem - long time UAE Desert Challenge Patron/CEO, former (multiple) FIA Middle East rally Champ (just as Nasser has been) and who is a member of the Emirate royal family.

Looks like they have the bikes skirting the salar....suppose they will alter the route if conditions permit for them to race a cross it.

Seems like quite a few days are almost exact repeats from previous years.

Its amazingly flat even off the Salar especially in parts of the northern bit so they should still get the effect, but given they have already had some rain in the area, I think we can count on it being around the not though. I will get an update once it starts.

I think a few of the specials will be cut short and maybe this will be one as well, as there is a quite an obvious shortcut.

Indeed we could...but given the change in rules and the liklihood of being banned from entering the Dakar (something on my bucket list) due to the new rules I may keep a lower profile this year. :cry
