I haven't seen it anywhere else, so I've made a couple of plots breaking the competitors down by country and manufacturer:

Given all the talk about the massive Honda entry, I was kind of surprised to realize there are actually more Yamahas. But I guess many of them are privateers, as opposed to the Honda people.

    Dubai & Abhu Dhabi GMT + 4 and our Ozzie mates + 8 - 11 ?

I recall reading that Dakar time is France (of course) - 4 so GMT - 3

It's coming up to 10.15pm sat night eastern daylight saving time in Oz so arg is 14 hours behind us.

Is there a schedule of local daily start times and in what order do they start each day?

Yes, Uller put up a schedule here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6jku0xh7c6t440i/Dakar%202014%20Distance%26Timing%20Summary.pdf.

As far as I know, the starting order depends on their results from the day before (last day's winner starts first, etc.)

    Edit:
Just to elaborate (having checked the rulebook):
On the first stage, the riders start in the order of their race numbers. On subsequent stages, the order is set by the results from the previous special (adjusted for any penalties).

The first 10 bikes are sent off with a gap of 2 minutes, the next 10 with a gap of 1 minute, and after that they are sent out in pairs every 30 seconds.

There is, however (as previously discussed in this thread), a provision for repositioning, which can be requested for "safety reasons" by any of the leading 15 riders. That might mix things up a bit.

What exactly is a "safety reason"?

An elite rider staring behind much slower ones creating a danger for both him and the guys he is overtaking, especially if it's dusty :thumb

Well, that's not quite clear, the rules don't mention any examples, but says that it is up to the International Jury to decide whether a reason is valid. Too old speculated earlier in this thread:

So yeah, I guess if a very fast rider is behind some slow ones, which would force him to do lots of overtaking, that might be a valid reason. I have a hard time coming up with anything else.

All you guys that have been following the Dakar for all your lives basically understand that there is a French bias. French teams get their roadbooks earlier sometimes 3 hours before anyone else, the old Australian HRC team that won some Aussie safaris that no one cares about told me they don't want you to win. Troy will know Ben Grabhams Honda team that ran a few years ago had to wait 3hours for updated roadbooks for the next day stage "weather events" rain whatever.
    The big teams got theirs
What I'm trying to say is that Ben can smash it and thanks to Ned and Pyndony from ADV for doing it in style Pyndons top 10 was magic, ride safe everyone.

All the usual questions we have heard answered before. Once again at the end they cornered Marc to comment about Cyril and his team, specifically if he would beat him. The sound quality made it difficult for me to hear everything but his response was simply that he would try of course! MArc said he has a lot of respect for Cyril, and it will be more interesting to see how they compete now that they are riding different brands. He concluded by saying that his team would be working hard to get the win backed with the experience of winning.

    Hi friends,
as in past four years, Jan Vesely (CZE) starting on his Yamaha WR450F. He has backup (using track) at Bonver Dakar Project - but no other team rider or so. He is there on his own and they just transport his spare parts in the bivouac in team truck.
Bike is from last year - it´s Jan´s own homework and his aim is to finish. Last year failed afer four stages with defective ignition coil, hope this year it will be without technical problems. He is type of rider, who ride if is it possible - once finished with broken ribs, broken nose etc...
