    Hey everyone,

During the 13.5 years I worked for the photo sharing site SmugMug.com, they were kind enough to let ADVrider's servers reside in their data centers. Their wonderful technical people kept the servers running.

Two years ago the entrepreneurial bug bit me again and I started a new company. SmugMug was gracious and kept ADVrider running, but when I left them we lost the ability to do software upgrades.

For ADVrider's entire 15-year life, with your donations and SmugMug picking up the slack, we've been able to run sponsorship and ad-free. In looking for a new home for ADVrider, I had to solve our need for technical help and cover our operating costs.

Enter David and Kevin. David and I have come to know each other pretty well and we've built a lot of mutual respect. Kevin has been David's right arm for technical support for many years.

So in a few weeks we plan a couple days of downtime while we pull ADV out of SmugMug and onto a new set of Amazon servers in the sky. And then it's between all of us + David and Kevin to make this work. The reality is we will need to slowly accept good sponsorships and advertisers, a first for us. Hopefully that will mean the likes of BMW and not get-your-viagra-online vendors.

David and Kevin have been receiving warm welcomes from the mods over the last little while. The mods are already asking for a few things like https. They seem to be optimistic and supportive and understand the job at hand.

On November 2nd, David and I are flying to Vegas for the Pahrump rally. I get to rent an Africa Twin! First time on one of those but what is this talk about auto shifting?! Blasphemy. :fpalm

    All the best,
    Baldy

I appreciate all the efforts that you personally have put into this place Chris.
The no ad policy and clean interface all these years has been a freshness not seen many places on the web.
I hope when the changes occur, that they are tasteful and not too intrusive.
It's been one of my favorite reasons for staying around.

I've been here from the very beginning so thanks for all the years of ADV.

I hope it all goes smoothly and the transition is headache free , my experience with modern tech makes me sceptical about the chances of that though :pope .

This. 100% that's the plan, tasteful and not too intrusive... Chris and I are still chatting through possible timelines but for sure no ads will be shown to members until 2018 and even then it's going to be as minimal as possible and non-intrusive. We all hate pop-ups, auto-play video, slow sites etc, none of that will be happening here :). Site speed and user experience will be the #1 priority. First step is getting the new servers rollin' and then we'll go from there.

    THIS x 1000!!!!

ADV is centered around motorcycles....but I have come to find......it is centered around life. The good, the bad, the honest opinions, the news, the advice on anything....and the ability to laugh at ourselves and realize how good we have it compared to a lot of others.

With no ads....it is a wonderful change from most others. But....bills have to be paid, stuff has to be bought to make this happen.

We have had a damn good run!!!!

I have made the case for that as strongly as I possibly can. One forum I am a regular on thehulltruth.com handles it very well. So well in fact that most members tend to be very loyal to and grateful for the forum vendors/sponsors.

Thanks for a great place to hang out on the internet.

I just sent you a few bones. I encourage folks to donate, and do it often, to advrider.

All I can add is "keep it simple". I think the tendency is to do different for different's sake, to add a cluster of options that clutter up a website and give users more options than they want or need. Remember that most of us here are not programmers.

    Good luck.
