That I don't know. If it has been announced, I missed it. I only know that Baldy said that it has been sold.

For quite a few years, companies that buy forums such as VerticalScope would reach out and ask if I was ready to sell ADVrider. I was only into ADVrider for my irrational love of riding and the community, so I always passed on selling. I was lucky, I worked at SmugMug and they were willing to cover most of the costs of hosting, and donations paid for the rest. I simply didn't have time to worry about ads, subscriptions, licensing the name, yada.

@rudy1220 & I had gotten to know each other over the years, and he had good experience with other communities. We gradually became friends and business partners and I could see that he knows far more than I about supporting a community through ads, subscriptions to opt out of the ads, etc.

So instead of selling ADVrider to someone big like VerticalScope and riding off in the sunset, David and I became partners in both ADVrider and Cake, the company I had been working on for a couple of years. As you've seen from the last six months or so since we made this arrangement, I've still worked hard on the spam problem, Russian trolls, moderating problems, etc., and David is working on how to support it financially when SmugMug cuts the chord, and how to upgrade it. I think that's what you'll see for a very long time. David has a really good head for moderation and building a community too, so we're learning plenty from him.

Thanks for that, Baldy. You have cleared that up for me, and I assume everybody else. :thumb

Make the DONATE button bigger. Whatever you do, do not sell to VertiCal Scope.

Hopefully it will not wind up in the hands of motorcycle.com. They have ruined so many good motorcycle sites. It would be a real shame for them to ruin the best of them all.

I copied pasted a link to the donate button and put it in my sig line. (a) to encourage others and make it convenient for them and (b) so I can find it easier.

First off all, make the donate button bigger, and in a banner up top (wikipedia style). I've been on this site for a few years now, to be honest I never noticed it. I'm sure many people would like to pitch in to avoid this site becoming an add infested mess, despite all the good intentions to the contrary. I want to believe it, however over the course of years I've seen many good sites go down this road and once this door is opened (and the add revenue starts coming in), it usually amounts to no good.

Wikipedia style, where every so many sessions you get a simple pop up with an honest call for a donation to keep this site going, that you have to click away. Totally not obtrusive and it will put the donation option front and centre, instead of buried on the page like it is now.

Either that or an option for a yearly fee to get rid of the adds. Everyone understands that running a website requires revenue and funds. I would definitely sign up for an honest, one time fee (yearly) to be able to enjoy an add free experience and support the site. I also pay for newspaper subscriptions and such, so I don't see the issue. Most of us spend a lot of time reading here. There's a strong and great community and a wealth of information you can't find anywhere else on the web. Let's say the annual fee is equivalent to two movie tickets. (just an assumption). I'm sure we all spend much more time here than the time it takes to watch two movies...

I understand add blockers are a douchy move, but many online outlets really don't leave you a choice. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

    Agreed.

Chris, for those of us with ADHD, it is always preferable to pay to minimize clutter and distractions. I would be pleased to subscribe. Like AriderX and many others I already subscribe to the Times, The Post, The Economist, MCN. An ADV subscription just makes sense.

Those who don't subscribe will get the very tasteful ads.

Please don't do merit badges like they do on the Super Tenere Forum for subscribers.

If you have to do something to recognize subscribers simply placing a halo around our posts would be acceptable. :lol3
