Things have gotten a little interesting at work recently. There's only so many times you can say "sorry, today is your last day" before you are forced to re-evaluate your priorities. Long story short, my wife quit her job and I'm taking a leave of absence for a while.

Time to go for a little ride.:evil

The plan is to leave for as much as two months with no fixed points, schedules other than what we want. We will pick nothing more than a direction and desire, and go.

As of today, we've been on the road for about 11 days and we're currently in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

There's been a whole saga leading up to this point, but I'll leave that for a rainy day. In the meantime, here's a couple of posts of the prep work on the bikes: F650GS and R1200GS Adventure

Until I can find a little more time to organize the pics and story of the trip so far, I'll leave you with this one:

I'm in photo upload hell right now, slow speed internet sucks. Anyway, here's a start to the story.

I was inspired by the Pic A Day thread, so I'm trying to take pictures everyday , no matter what.

    Here's departure day.

We left Massachusetts and headed for Connecticut to stay with a good friend of mine from high school. His kids were lots of fun and even took some of the more flatering photos of me.[IMG]

    I should mention some of the "trip rules" for this trip;
    -No interstates
    -No fast food
    -No annoying thy partner

On the first and second days we broke the interstate rule, but then we were really good until South Dakota.

My partner isn't very faithful about the fast food one either. After two weeks, we're both breaking the third rule.

    Back to the trip.

By the time we hit Providence, the traffic was nasty and we were in stop and go traffic for about an hour in the heat. One of my modifications, a welding rod holder turned tool tube began to melt. Since I have family in Pennsyltucky, I figured I better make the time and use my uncle's shop.

Here's the heat shield hack job: (crappy cell phone photo)

In return, I got suckered into some chores.

By the next morning, some of my repairs were suffering. I bought some heat tape to wrap the tube, but since I had some left, I wrapped the exhaust extension. It promptly fell off.

Oh well. We made it to the edge to PA and started looking for a campsite, but ran into issues.
but when we finally settled in, we had a nice dinner.

We brought three, yes 3 stoves with us. We also brought a non-stick pan, 14 spices, an espresso maker, and forgot the espresso. Actually, we forgot a couple of essentials, but I'll get to that later.

That afternoon we traveled across RT6 in PA and eventually made our way to Lake Erie.

We had a nice dinner of "city chicken" Mmmm, my favorite.

Anyone know what city chicken is?

That night, this dude rolled in. He was headed from Maine back home to Montana. His bike reminded me of Emilio Scotto.

Did I mention our maps got soaked as well? No real harm.

On our way through Ohio, we bumped into this lad. I don't miss these days of small budget and hard learning. Gotta give him credit for getting it done though.

Saw a couple of these along the way too.

Third major issue. The first three nights away from home we stayed with friends and family, so we never noticed that we never packed Bethany's sleeping bag. We also forgot the nice Michelin atlas. When going on a road trip, you might want to have both of these with you.

Anyway, we suffered through the first couple of nights while family back home sent us the bag.

We arranged to have it sent to a small post office just east of Toledo. I figured that we've have better help in a small town rather than a large one. As it turns out, I was more right than I knew.

    Meet Betty.

Who was so sweet. She offered to let us stay with her.

They have a zip line over thier pond. I knew I liked these folks.

That night, we were treated to a great sunset.

I hope I warned you that you'll see a lot of bike porn in this little trip.

I never knew there were Amish people outside of PA and Ohio. They're a little different here though, they ride around in vans, shop in Quick-E-Marts and even ride recumbent bikes.

Our white gas stove wanted to become a Molotov cocktail today. Nothing a little cleaning couldn't help.

We decided to stay an extra day in Indiana and take the train into Chicago. It's good to take a day away from anything after about five days.

As we roll through this tiny little town, I notice a motorcycle museum. Can't get enough of this type of culture.

although it's really more of a bar than a museum.

    but that's ok.

Besides, we needed to wash down the bugs we swallowed in Illinois.

We decided to do a little stealth camping in Iowa, but at about 9pm we decided that the spot wasn't very hidden and we should move on. There's a state park about 1.5 hours away. We arrive about 10:30 and there's no one around. It's very dark. At least thats the excuse I'm using for not seeing this sign.
I proceed slowly, and fall over slowly.
everything is going fine until I realize it's too slippery to get any traction to lift. The pig keeps sliding further and further. I finally get it up against a rock and then I hear a pop.
down I go. Something's not right with my back. Bethany knows I'm not right and jumps in the water with me to help. Together we unload all the bags (why didn't I do this to start?) and together we get her up right. There's no way we'll get her across this creek with my back, so we slowly do a 20 point turn and get her spun around. We crash not far from creek for the night. Three Advil for me tonight.

Plenty of time for bizarre shots.

The back moves, but not much and it comes with a reminder not to.

This old timer gave us a nice friendly wave.

We did manage to start getting some more interesting photos.

I'm sure there's a reason I was meant to see this. Please remind me later.
