This is a serious question and out of curiosity.

Why do Australians call quad/four wheeler ATVs bikes? :scratch

I know you understand that bi = two and quad = four, so what gives?

    Just curious, no slight intended.

It's not just Australians. I've run into the rather contradictory concept of a "quadbike" in many places.

Maybe "penguin chaser" was deemed not an ecologically sensitive term? (I had to google "chook chaser" the first time I saw it in a RR--:D )

The term that gets me is in recent years Americans referring to snowmobiles as snowmachines. Everyone knew what a snowmobile was. If you say snowmachine the listener is left wondering (without a frame of reference) is it a snow plow, a snow blower, a machine that makes artificial snow, or a tracked vehicle with skis on the front for steering? Did snowmobile sound too French, and Snow Freedom didn't sound quite right? Anyone have an insight on that one for me?:ear

Quad bikes are used a lot on farming properties around AUS, I know that all of the farms I go too call them "quads" or "quad bikes". Best I can come up with is that you sit astride the seat, same as on a two wheeler and they are made by manufacturers that make motorcycles. A farmer couldn't say to his worker "take the Yamaha and bring in that mob of sheep" if he had a Yamaha two and four wheeler. So the four wheeler became the "quad bike".

We don't use the term ATV here to describe a quad bike...:D

Yeah..... no one out here in the sticks of S.W. Oklahoma, where quads out number bikes probably 50-1, uses the term ATV either.

That kind of went out with the three wheelers/trikes. .......... Do you call three wheelers "trike bikes"?
