Question? R90/S

    I'm looking at buying a 1974 R90/S, its clean runs well and the guy is asking 2000? Does this sound like a good price?
    How hard is it to put disc brakes on?
    Will a 140 lb woman be able to motor it around?
    Will it work to tell the wife its for her, so she'll let me buy it?

    That is an excellent price if it IS a complete R90/S. I believe it should already have twin ATE disks up front with a drum rear. If you have the VIN# you can go here: http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi and plug in the last 7 digits. It will tell you the model/month/year.
    As far as convincing your wife......That's totally YOUR responsibility. :nod

    I would drop 2 G's on a well running, in good shape Airhead in a hot second, authentic "S" or not.

    You could part the fucker out on eBay for more than that, but then you would rot in eternal damnation for eternity.

    Im sure it has a drum up front, does that make it something else? I didn't think they put discs up front till 76, or was that the rear? Thanks for the replys.

    If it has a drum up front it's not a 90S. I think even the /6s had at least one disk up front but, $2K is a great price for any running Airhead. You might try dropping a question on boxerworks.com

    No discs up front means not a genuine 90/S, ask more questions about it, but as stated 2K, is a very good price for any airhead in good running order. :nod

    That's not an R90S, that's fur sure. I'd bet you've got some wacked out thing like an R90 motor in an R60/6 or earlier /5 chassis.

    The R90S came in only two color combinations, black smoke and Daytona Orange. They both came with disc brakes. Early models had the old style switch gear, but the later models had the /6 style switchgear.

    Try to find out a little more about the history, but I'm almost certain you have a bitsa bike here. Bitsa this and bitsa that....

    BMW started with the disc brake in the front in '74 for every model but the r60/6..


    paid 2500$ for my R90/6 with 20,000 on the clock.. 90S should be faster and have twin front discs, and a higher geared rear end..

    ...as well as a fairing with one or two more gauges mounted..

    Sorry to have lead ya'll astray its a 90/6 and it has twin discs, 36,000 miles. He's a friend of mine and is asking 2k. The wife even looks good on it. Now it's hopefully just a matter of getting the money together. Have a look.

    it looks OK, thats low milage for that bike, ride it and if it's as clean as it shows in the pics, buy it :thumb

    'kin A! jump on that for 2k. I paid about the same for my /5 that had been restored. and that was a long ass time ago. looks like it has some bitsa to it. /7 or S style seat, later disks. but none of that means anything. if the bike is a basic solid runner and been well cared for, it's a keeper.

    FWIW, there are a lot of tarted "R90S" bikes out there. typically they would go for a hell of a lot more, even in pretty used shape. Personally I would rather get a nice 100S and stick the R90 style fairing on it and call it good.

    What Chop said. We've thought about buying an older airhead of /6 or /7 vintage and what you've got there is a great deal. It has the newer style bags, so if you wanted to, you might sell those and go with the original Krausers. I believe, and I could be wrong here, the mounts are different between the two bag styles too.

    It sure looks lovely. $2k for 36k miles...if that is the bike you're lookin' for, git it. You're not gonna find a better price. Sweet.

    The /6 models had plenty drawbacks--none of which matter a bit if you stay inside the intended performance envelope. Damn, that one really looks purty. The RS 3/4 seat is cute, and is definitely an item. Have fun with that bike.
