    Hello All.

Last summer I did a four day weekend trip from Idaho Falls, to Boise, Hells Canyon, and back, using mostly dirt roads and forest roads.

I timed this trip so I could attend the annual Hells Canyon gathering.

In total this trip was 1,150 miles and the route looked something like this.

As you can see, it was supposed to be mostly National Forest roads, but I was detoured twice, both due to snow.

Once at "D" on the way to Boise, and once at "I" on the way back. The orange lines are what the route should have been without the road closures.

This will be a picture intensive Ride Report with 270 pictures, but I think you will like it.

I saw some really scenic stuff in really remote areas.

    So stay tuned...

    I was excited.

I'd been reading about the Hells Canyon gathering for a couple of years and I wanted to check it out.
Also, I was going to meet up with a friend who I had worked with over ten years ago. We lost track of each other for years, and then when I moved out to Idaho, somehow we reconnected.. and he rides a KTM too! :D

So what better thing to do than to take a long weekend a go ride!

So early in the morning I rolled my fully loaded KTM Super Enduro out of the garage, and was ready to hit the dirt roads and take the scenic route to Boise to meet up with Tyler.

Here's my bike ready to go.

It looks like I have a lot of stuff, and actually I do...
Clothing, tools, parts, camping gear, food, and 2 gallons of water.
Were going to be taking the less traveled roads, and it pays to be prepared.

So we head west on Rt 20 towards Arco.

    Long straight flat roads...

The volcanic cinder cones in the distance.

When in Arco, you have to stop and see the Nuclear Powered Submarine... :eek1
    [IMG]

Then we continue west towards Mackey and Copper Basin.

    Tall mountains in the distance.

Finally we leave the pavement behind and head up into the mountains surrounding Copper Basin on the way towards Ketchum, ID.

    "No Traffic Signs" :lol3
    [IMG]

    Were headed up there...

Down there to the left is the road we came in on down in the valley.

    Nice view huh?

We head into the basin beyond...

    We break for lunch.

    Yummy...

After our feeding break, we head west towards Ketchum, Id.

    Notice the Copper Colored rocks?

    Yeah! Wide open spaces...

    Vroom!!!

At the intersection we head South West.

GPS says we are not going slow...

Gaining elevation we start to see more trees.

We crest the ridge, and look town into the valley beyond.

    Gosh, this is lovely!

Down in the valley we approach civilization.

We need to stop and get gas. Super Enduros are thirsty beasts.

    This will work.

    Even better yet! :clap
    [IMG]

    More to come...

    OK.
So we fill up both fuel tanks, giving us a range of about 350 to 400 miles, and head into the Sawtooth National Forest. I'd heard from Idaho Sam that this was an excellent area and I wanted to check it out.

We should be taking a route as shown in orange.

We head due west on Hot Springs Road.

Soon the road turns to dirt...

Remnants of an old forest fire.

I stop to check out Frenchman's Hot Springs.
( I love natural Hot springs...)

    Lots of rules here... :huh
    [IMG]

What? No Alcohol or Nudity? :huh
    This could suck...

We go a little up the road and park the bike.

Looking over the edge of the river, you can see the soaking pools, but the river level is up and it's washing out the hot springs.

Looks like the water level needs to drop before these pools are useable.
    Good to know.

Well, we've got distances to cover and it's already late afternoon...
    We've got to get moving.

We race on and gain elevation.

As we get near the pass...

    Oh Shit.

I hike ahead to see if we can get through this.

    Nope...

Crap, we have to turn back.

    Girr...

We get back to Ketchum, and take the pavement to Boise.
I've got over 150 miles to go...

As we head West South West, and I look to my right I can see the mountain that I SHOULD be riding in.

We can make some time here...

    A bit of history...

    I like tanks!

    The final push into Boise.

I make it to Tyler's house around 6:00 pm.

We park the bike behind his house, unload my gear, and proceed to eat, drink and tell tall tales.

    Not a bad day.

So Tyler had to work most of the day, which was OK.
He had Wi-Fi and I was able to get some work done too.

But mid-day we took a break and went to lunch.
But we took his car.

It's quick and very fun to ride in... BOOST!!!

We had sandwiches at the local deli.
and yeah.. I timed the shot deliberately. :lol3

    Then back to Tyler's house...
By around 4:00 pm he was able to sneak out of work and we went to his garage to get his bike ready for the trip.

Tyler has a sweet KTM LC4.

But like most KTM's it wants attention before it let's you ride it. :D
    [IMG]

But soon we were on the road again headed towards Hell's Canyon.

The route looks something like this. Again, no major roads.

GPS says we have 4.5 hours till our destination, and I think that's optimistic.

We knew some god dirt roads that took us north.

    Nice dirt road cruising.

We came to a fork in the road, so I took it. :lol3
Actually we turned left and headed West.

The sun was setting ahead of us.

The fields are nice and green.

But the shadows are getting longer and it's starting to get cold.

Soon were riding in the dark on NF-39.
We're somewhere in the Hells Canyon Recreation Area, so it's public land...
No point in busting our asses in the dark to get to the event.
So we find a small dirt road and follow it towards a clearing.
It seems like as good a place as any to set up camp for the night.

So we work up in paradise...
There was a river just aside from our campsite and the air was rich with the smells of the tall pine trees...

The camp area turned out to be quite nice. This was the first time we had seen it since we set up camp in the dark.

    Here's my Camp Snuggly.

    Here's Tyler enjoying breakfast.

    We packed up.

Here's the two bikes ready for a day of fun.

    Today's route looks like this...

    We rode NF-39...

The views kept getting better as we got near the ridgeline.

    We stopped at the viewpoint.

    This is the view.
    You like it.

    Flower pictures for Ladybug.

    The view some some more.

Soon were back on the bikes doing what the GPS tells us.

If you have ever ridden NF-39....

Well, let's just say it's really, really really fun!

I can't believe they paved this and then were silly enough to attempt to post a speed limit. :lol3

    After the twisties...

    We head into Joseph...

and stop to get some food!

    More to come.

After feeding, we rode towards the gathering point for the Hells Canyon Gathering.

But along the way I stopped here to see if they had a front tire for the Super Enduro.

They didn't so we moved on.

A few miles down the road we came to our destination for the evening.

Everybody was out riding, so we set up our tents.

We talked to a few people who had stayed - mostly because their bikes had broken or what have you - and were given directions for a half day ride.

So we put our gear back on, and went out for a casual ride.
    First we needed more gas.

Then we followed the route given to us. It would take us on back roads to the town of Troy and Flora with some amazing views of Hells Canyon as well. We didn't care. We were just happy riding.

At first the road was paved, but still really scenic.

Nice farmland. It reminded me of Europe.

Then the route tuned to dirt.

We gained some elevation and headed up into some state forest.

    Up on a ridge line.

    Stopping to admire the view.

The road wasn't half bad either. Just nice relaxing cruising.

Yeah, this is nice and peaceful.

Then the road took us down towards a branch of Hells Canyon.

    And the views became amazing!

We had to stop and take it all in.

This was unexpected and simply wonderful!

    The river below.

And the switchbacks were amazing. Perfect for moto prOn!

    Yeah.... this is nice!

After many switchbacks we neared the bottom of the canyon.

We stopped at the edge of the river for a swim.

    Tyler.

    Me!

After our swim, the road folowed the river for a few miles.

Then it crossed the river and went back up the canyon to another ridge.
The views as we climbed out were amazing as well.

An over the shoulder shot. There's Tyler behind me.

At an overlook we stopped to enjoy another view.

The I followed Tyler back to Enterprise and our camp.

But before we got to camp, we had to stop and get some supplies for dinner.

Load secured and ready for transport. :lol3
    [IMG]

Back at camp we enjoyed our rations and congratulated ourselves on a good day.

As the evening came upon us, all the other riders filtered back from adventure of their own.

After a few hours of meet and greet, we were told it was time for dinner. :dg

    Oh yeah!

    Nom, nom, nom!

Tyler seems to approve as well.

I've been to the Outer Banks, and this T-shirt makes sense to me.

As the evening progressed, we migrated to the fire.

Some folks messed with their GPS files by the campfire.

I just remember going to sleep and snoring loudly...
