Quick Question - F800GS fuel range?

    Hi all, I've got an F800GS loaner while my 1200R is in the shop. Not sure how accurate the fuel gauge is, and need to do a lot of travelling in the next few days. Just trying to get a quick idea of what the fuel range is on this bike.

    My 2010 will go about 320km (200 miles) with a mix of highway & surface streets - pretty much on fumes after that.

    Around 200 miles give or take depending how fast you are going. It drops off significantly at higher speeds. At 65mph I will average in the mid 50's, at 75+ mid 40's. The tank holds 4.2 gals.

    I assume you have a post 2010 model? The gauge accuracy seem to differ between bikes and post 2010 gauges measure differently than the early ones.

    Run a tank through it and see what yours does. Yours should have an instrument pod on the right. There is button on the left hand grip that cycles some apps on it. One is average miles per gal and another is instant mileage. Informative some times.

    Thanks, guys - I'll go with about 200. The bike only has about 1000 miles on it, so I'm thinking it's a '13 or a '14. It has the same gauge cluster as my '07 1200, but cycling through the screens, it doesn't have a "distance to empty" like my bike does... and I wouldn't trust if it did, since the DTE on my bike is all over the place until it gets pretty low.

    When the light comes on if you say 40 miles to empty you'll be fine.

    Dalton highway, Coldfoot to Deadhorse, Alaska.... 2-up.
    250 miles of gravel, we used 4.02 gallons.
    Made it to Deadhorse on stock tank.
    Return trip, we added one 16 ounce Techron, and a Liter of 90 octane unleaded, mostly because we got tired of carrying the excess.
    .
    after 11,000 miles, mostly 2 - UP, the 2013 F800gs has overall average of 58 miles per gallon. At 55 MPH it will make continuous, consistent 65 mpg.

    With the addition of a CAMEL tank, 6 full usable gallons will give 300 mile range, at speeds under 65.
    you get in a hurry, you will need MORE GAS.

    If you stay under 60 mph / 100 kph you will get great economy, if you go up not so much. with my 100 mph / 160 kph highway commuting i do i get as little as 100 milse / 160 km on a tank :huh

    Single trail, backroads, open dirt, mountain asphalt, highway. Mine seems to run about 380-420km per tank.
    I did squeeze 17L into the tank after a 430km run :huh Readout said 9km to empty and I believe it would have been close to that.
    Currently reads 330km on the trip from the last ride - playing in the mountains with sports bikes - tells me still 135km left in the tank.
    Superduke I was riding with stopped to fill twice on that run. :eek1

    That's right. In recent years, BMW got rid of the "distance to empty" feature since they couldn't accurately predict it and I'm guessing were getting too many calls into their roadside assistance service with people asking for spare gas.

    What you will see on the display now is "miles traveled" since the gas light came on, so the onus is on you to decide how far past that light you're willing to ride. In my experience, about 40 miles is what you can do at that point. Anything more and you're gambling.

    Got 335 km the other day riding 2 up and some good throttle twisting. When I filled up 15.6 liters went into the tank. I guess there was just fumes left? haha

    In any case, for me this bike has amazing fuel economy. Love the range, don't need any more for what I do riding wise. A huge improvement fuel economy wise over my V-Rod.

    I wonder how you guys get these insane mileages. I've been tracking mine on and off on fuelly for the last few months, and my trailing average is44.3. This is over more than 5000 miles, so it is not a one off. The bike is on the stock silencer, no AXFied or power commander on. I have a bit of the freeway on my daily commute, which probably kills my mileage. But the bike hasn't been that spectacular on backroads either, although it ends up being a slightly better 50 mpg or so.

    I am surprised that your average is so low. I do a lot of Sierra Foothill riding which includes some dirt, a lot of back roads and the bike has averaged 57/58 mpg doing that. The best mileage I have done included Sonora, Ebbetts and Monitor passes at pretty fast clip, that netted 61mpg. Altitude makes a difference.

    Not much freeway riding. 75 mph gets about 47mpg.

    I have the AF-XIED and a Leo Vince exhaust. At lower speeds, mileage went up :eek1. I have been running a 17 tooth sprocket on for the last 600 miles. Last tank was 57mpg.

    Except for riding at high speed, nothing seems to change much.

    Low fuel light turned on at about 190km, filled up at 230km (2014 model)

    First tank, and I ride it like I used to ride my R6. Probably not maximizing fuel efficiency :)

    I get 170 miles before the light comes on then don't go more than 30 more after that but from everything I have been told and read it will go 40.

    Now I am jealous. I still have to commute every weekday, so as an experiment, I am going to avoid the freeway after my next tank fill up. I've been suspecting for a while that freeways are killing my mileage.

    I got 215 out of one tank going 75mph on hwy 99 heading South to Bakersfield, I spent a lot of time laying down and hiding behind the little windshield. I was only about 7 miles into the reserve but I wasn't going to climb the grade to Tehachapi with a fuel warning light on.

    The bike uses a computer neural net for its engine management system, so it learns how to operate based on your throttle usage, the heavier you are on the gas the more it learns to anticipate you want power all the time, ergo your mileage will be low even when you are babying it around because it is ready to provide power when you want it, conversely if you tend to just putt around and are light on the throttle, it learns you don't want instant power and it adjusts for that, so you get better mileage.

    At least that's how I understand it.
