    Sorry, make that "quote etiquette."

I have satellite internet that gets throttled after a meager amount of megabytes a day. While reading picture-intensive posts, it really puts a frost on my surfing ADV to see something like this:

Reply to Super-Duper Adv Ride Report

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

quoted pix that I've seen seventeen times previously

    The reply:

    :clap:clap:clap

This is a stupid waste of bandwidth on both ends. It's pretty easy to *edit* a quote, and is a lot gentler on the servers and the end user. I'm willing to do a write-up on how, if it's needed.

On that note, any reason to quote the original post? Sure, it's not pic-heavy, but I think we all know who you intended to reply to.

You are asking people to not be stupid.

    Good luck with that.

There are more idiots in the world now than ever before.
This is not just a function of increased population, it is also
caused by the reality that stupid people breed like rats
and smart people might not even have children at all. It is
getting worse, and that is the state of the world at this time.

Many motorcycle riders are stupid uneducated illiterate
fools who have the good sense of an average boulder in a field.
If you don't believe this is true you have only to read a few more
posts on ADVrider to see just how incredibly stupid some of these
cretins are. They cannot spell, they don't know grammar, and they
are too lazy or too stupid to even search for something themselves
using Google; instead they post and ask someone else to do their work
    for them !

Do you really think they will use the couple of extra keystrokes to
get rid of the link to the photos before they quote a post ? You may
as well expect them to have manners in public and most of them certainly
don't do that. So you are going to be disappointed in your quest for
improvement in the behavior of idiots.

If the quoting of photos in posts bothers you that much, it's probably
a good idea to spend more time riding and less time in front of
a computer. This works very well indeed for me. In the end most of
this ADVrider stuff is a waste of time and riding is a lot more nourishing
for the soul than anything which can be done while sitting in front of a
    computer.

Sometimes ( in the interest of clarity ) there is good reason
to quote the original post , and other times there is not a
good reason to quote the original post. So there is no absolute
rule on whether quoting the original post is a good idea or not.
This means the person who is doing the quoting needs to think
a bit before writing, but of course that is beyond many of the folks
who post on this website. What you get instead is the verbal equivalent
of gastrointestinal gas-producing activity from them.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Just waiting for the snow to come off, and then I'll put my miles against yours. Don't be a twat.

If you have no other overwhelming reason, hit "reply" rather than "quote." Most readers will get your message. If you're simply trying to boost your post count, go down to The Basement and start a thread in Jomama. If you really want action, I suggest one on gun control or taxation.

    Trust this helps.

Having had it installed for all of a half-hour, I can't give a definitive answer. If it reduces some of the bandwidth issues, I'll be satisfied.

I just loaded TamperMonkey, and set ScriptSafe permissions. So now I need to go find that 17 picture post thread, and take 'er for a test drive! :D

No luck with it working or no luck finding a proper post to test it? If it's the second, try Colebatch's Sibirsky Extreme thread.

There is an option in the Control Panel-Edit Options to turn off loading of images. You just click on the image tags that you want to see.

Nope, it's the former. I can't seem to get the SS permissions to accept TM.

    EACH IMAGE DOWNLOADS ONLY ONCE.

Your browser simply displays multiple copies of the same data.

This works as long as the picture is in cache.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this pet peeve.

I tend to automatically look at every other page when viewing "Show pics of your XXXX here" threads due to this phenomenon. So many people do it, I doubt it'll ever slow down or stop.

Until the cache purges, and the entire process starts over again. This is particularly pernicious when there are multiple large images in a post.
