The original Boge shocks aren't very good to begin with. I wouldn't have one on my bike. ymmv.

Optional WP shock is a terrific unit. Be a shame to use anything less.

Dutch mfg'r of quality suspension products. Been around for years. Currently owned by KTM.

As supplied on GSPD's and optional on "lesser" GS's.

I have a WP on my GS. Just had it rebuilt. WOW .. what a difference.
New spring, new seals... cost $200 for the rebuild.. but one great shock.

First thing I do ..on all new bikes is to set the supension and put new shocks or rebuilt if they need them.

Old airheads will wobble with crappy rear shocks.

The WP unit on my bike was replaced under waranty by BMW Canada at 88k kms. The bike's got 265k kms on it
now. Shock has never leaked and still works great. Yes, that's right. The shock has nearly 180k kms on it and it
works fine. And I'm kinda fussy about suspension.

If it ever shows signs of leaking or compromised damping I'll rebuild it toot sweet.

    WP shocks. Good gear.

Had my standard BMW shock rebuilt by Bruno. $325.00 CDN 3-4 years ago. Put in heavier (thk 500 or 550lb spring) + plus modded dampning (don't ask me how). Based on my weight and riding style. Also adds schrader valve to top up nitro if required once in a while. Has worked out well for me. Didn;t have moola for fancy upgrade rear shocker at the time...so far so good...havn't done the upgrade as I was happy with the unit. Some more adjustibility would have been nice but at my stage in riding life I was happy.

Was just up at Bruno's place last week...he's will be redoing splines etc for my RS...and needed a excuse for a ride...reason he;s not too communicative now is its haying time...in his real life he's a farmer....winter work is the time he does most of the "other" work. Better to call him and leave a message...he always gets back to you.

Great guy, known him for a good number of years...does excellenet work and fun to talk too.

If I was staying with the GS I'd go the WP root as Lornce suggested. Great product value.

My 88 GS has been sitting in a barn since 1993. Will the shock be bad with 6049 miles on it? I'm making my list of things I have to do before riding it.

In 1991 I bought a new R100GS, I went through 3 OEM shocks in 45,000Kms until BMW gave me a WP as a replacement for free. Never looked back. Now I just saw my old GS on Craigslist for well over twice what I sold it for last year........and back with one of them crappy OEMs too.:baldy

As Lornce says, WP has been making suspension units for years. Interestingly, WP stands for "White Power" which was what the company was called before they had a marketing department and decided that it wasn't the most marketable name for a motorcycle suspension manufacturer (but it may be just dandy for someone selling pillow cases with eye holes cut in them).

    Ah, those Dutch.

The first OEM shock (not a WP) on my '88 GS crapped out at about 11K miles. The warranty replacement lasted about that long too. The dealer gave me a final replacement unit but I then replaced it with a Fox unit (it was a decent aftermarket item at the time but I don't believe they support BMW applications anymore).

My symptoms were an oil leak followed by zero damping. Unless your shock has already been replaced it's likely that you'll be replacing it sometime sooner than later.
