R100GS output shaft bearing, fact or fiction?

    I've owned three GS's in the past with 2 having problems with the output shaft bearing in the tranny. One exploded in Miami, leaving me stranded for a week while another was replaced - along with a retrofitted output shaft w/ c - clip - during a two month trip last summer. Any one else have this experience(s)?

    OUtput bearing failure is not uncommon. Though the mileage tends to be high. I'd consider it preventative maintenance to replace the bearing or put in a circlip.

    I concur. If you're tearing into the tranny at all, replace all seals and bearings, and make sure the output shaft gets the groove for circlip (and install the circlip!). The time and effort required to remove and disassemble the tranny, as well as re-shimming the rear cover, more than makes up for the cost of bearings and seals....

    Been there, done that...Circlips and their grooves are a must if you ever crack the tranny case open. I had mine rebuilt with the groove and a taller 5th gear at the same time by an independent wrench in San Jose Ca. for about $250 plus parts.
    I heard a well placed source mention that there were some of the later model R100GSPD Classics that had the circlip re-installed from the factory.
