R100RS lowers - remove exhaust?

    1981 RS - It has the split lowers with the bracket at the bottom.

    I was under the impression that the split allowed you to remove the lowers without taking the pipes off. It's looking like I may be wrong.
    Do I need to remove the exhaust?
    What's the trick here?

    The split allows you to remove them without pulling the exhuast. Handy in the hot weather. You do have to twist the fairing to spread it for the pipe to pass through.

    I tell you what I've come across a couple of times, with those lowers and the bottom bracket...the captive nuts on the inside of the lower, that the bracket bolt screws into, get messed up and can turn, sometimes ripping out a small section of the lower. It's the use of epoxy (or similar) that some PO's use to fix it, which glues together the split in the lower fairing, that causes a problem, whereby the header needs to come off...it's a pain, but there's not much you can do about it. Have a look on the inside of the lower to see if this has happened in your case.

    I will also warn you that as these bikes age, the fairings are becoming more brittle. Especially in areas where they can get quite warm. I have seen many lowers that are supposed to be twisted some to get them off, just crack and break apart. I always am very carefull with them and test them by applying light pressure in the twist, if I find they just don't seem to want to twist enough, I never force them. It isn't that big a deal to remove the exhaust. The amount of time it takes to pull the exhaust is less than buying new/used lowers and painting them.
