My '02 1150 was completely cured by the cam chain tensioner.

I did the cam chain tensioner, but not until about a month after the RxP treatment. If you're not a wrench, the $8 RxP is a good alternative to the $140 or so that the cam chain tensioner costs installed. And the high RPM ride was worth doing in its own right. :nod

Having said that, the tensioner did change the startup noises from the unholy clatter of dead adventurer's bones from hell to a nice purring VROOOM! :D

'00 GS The new tensioner didn't help the pinging at all. Quieter at startup and less knocking when it gets hot ,so the update is still worthwhile.
Normally the pinging isn't a big problem, but when riding at high altitudes , it's down right infuriating. For all intensive purposes it's a speed governor on my bike. Even over 6k in 4th or 5th ,the dam bike just will not pull past 90mph.

    Mr. Steptoe,

what bike is this? I can't assume that this would work on any model GS.

I've done alot of digging, and there seems to be no real listing of BMWs maps buried in the motronic. I can tell you steptoes mod transformed my 03 GSA. They don't ALL do that anymore!

I found a product that some UK GSers have used (bbpower chip), and the instruction sheet seems to indicate several different settings possible via jumper, but I haven't tried em, so can't be sure. Makes me wonder if the product is mostly just a jumper too! Once I saw the steptoe mod worked so well I quit thinking about it. here is the info for those who wish to pursue it.

Here is a compilation of BMW factory info about the different coding plugs, but you know what? There is 1 combination left not listed on this chart, so I did a little more research.

In case you do not see it - there are 8 possible ways to connect the common pin 30, with the three other pins.

    Code:
       1) 30 --
       2) 30 86
       3) 30 87
       4) 30 86 87
       5) 30 87a
       6) 30 86 87a
       7) 30 87 87a
       8) 30 86 87 87a
One of the 8 possible combinations isn't listed in the chart above.

    A connection between pins 30, 86, and 87a

It is listed by BMW as 'Special Plug', and is part number 71 60 7 659 547

That would be 30 and 87a. Light Brown.

The jumper wire in his picture above is different that the yellow code plug in his other pictures.

    Great information,
    Having a R1100GS which used Motronic 2.2,
What combination can I use so that I can run regular Unleaded fuel, (low octain) to minimise pinging?, Non CAT, I know the Motronic 2.4 uses a different CAT code plug, any Ideas with the 2.2,
    cheers all.

I just did the mod and the bike still runs. Will have to wait till it stops snowing to try it out.
    THANKS Steptoe.
